man that is one thing I miss…
there is one cuban restaurant in asheville, but it is complete garbage.
Yeah Havana is not very good, but Salsa's and Chorizo are both excellent latin restaurants.
Oh, and I should add that Mamacitas makes a great burito.
the owner of salsas and havana is the same. salsas is not bad, but heard some bad things about their kitchen. Never tried chorizo.
As for mexican, there are plenty of good favorites around town. Just not the Cuban I yearn for.
Hector Diaz owns four restaurants in Asheville, Salsa's, Chorizo, Modesto and Bomba. All are excellent. I have never seen his name associated with Havana, and there is a huge difference in the food quality between Havana and Hector's places. I don't know how Havana stays in business with so many better choices around town.

They're at 50,000 students now. That alone provides plenty of incentive to attract developers… worked for UCF.

Boca is more of a college town right now than West Miami will ever be. I'm here right now the closest thing FIU has to entertainment is the Dolphin Mall. Nothing remotely close to an O'Brien's or Irishman. Not even anything close to Night Owl. You guys are pathetic.
Well that escalated quickly. Look man, if you're looking for bars and nightlife in Sweetwater, you're going to be disappointed. Miami-Dade offers a wide variety of entertainment. Dolphin mall is mostly restaurants but if you make your way to town and country mall, in Kendall, you'll find a Blue Martini, a World of Beer, and a couple of other restaurants.
The real partying happens on Brickell in downtown and in Miami Beach. Tons of bars on Brickell. And Miami Beach is the club capital down here. You can also go to Coral Gables for some nice gastropubs and bars.
FIU is located in West Miami-Dade County. Sweetwater just happens to be right next door. There is still PLENTY to do down here. If you can't find a party in Miami, maybe you're the one that's "pathetic."
PS: UM is in Coral Gables. By no means is that a "college town." Big metropolitan areas like Miami aren't usually what I think of when I think of college towns. I think small cities that cater only to students and faculty like Gainesville.

To be fair, the City of Sweetwater approached FIU about becoming a college town and creating a district for student life extending off campus. I don't know the progress on that but I know it's an initiative on the table.

Correct. It's going to be tough for Sweetwater though. The majority of their popular is low income that rent. They want to change that by building student housing developments where these old rental apartments stand, but it's going to take some time. And even if they do, there is no gaurantee that restaurants and bars will follow suit. The demographic needs to change dramatically before they can really change the perception of the city.
For now, FIU student will find entertainment where most of the locals do. Gables, Coconut Grove, Kendall, Downtown and Miami Beach. All of these places are at most, 15 minutes away (south beach being the furthest).

Speaking of the college town subject, I will say that the 20th Street corridor in Boca is beginning. Some of you know I will be opening a Fan shop on 20th hopefully in March. I have heard from a good source within the city that changing the name of 20th street to University Blvd. is a done deal.
Also an almost done deal is a 400+ dorm being built (by a private company) near BookSmart. That will certainly be great for those new FAU-centric businesses in the area.
