Speaking of the college town subject, I will say that the 20th Street corridor in Boca is beginning.  Some of you know I will be opening a Fan shop on 20th hopefully in March.  I have heard from a good source within the city that changing the name of 20th street to University Blvd. is a done deal.

You are ideally-positioned, it would seem, to be on the inside track for information like this. If you hear any more about this, please let us know.

As I mentioned, Boca hasn't said much about it lately. Last I heard was that they wanted some Treasure Coast Redevelopment Council to do a study and get back to them.

What I'd like to know is: let's say they want to make wholesale changes to the area and change the existing shops on 20th from what it is to something like this

Imagine that at the SE corner of 2nd and 20th where the limo/gym/Bargoons places are now.

What happens to all the tenants of the various buildings? Does the city just claim eminent domain and give you 6-12 months to vacate, does a developer have to buy all those buildings and let your leases lapse, how does it work? Maybe they offer you money to keep the business afloat and effectively close you down for the 6-12 months it takes to build a new building in the same space, then offer you a bay in it?

Do you have any idea?

Because that plaza is doing pretty well recently but I can see a plan wanting to bring the buildings closer to the road and have them be taller.

Also an almost done deal is a 400+ dorm being built (by a private company) near BookSmart.  That will certainly be great for those new FAU-centric businesses in the area.

Yep, University Park (from the same developers that erected Addison Park).

It was supposed to be open for Fall 2013 and there's no way they're going to hit that mark, so hopefully they can get it up and running for Fall 2014.

Boca is more of a college town right now than West Miami will ever be. I'm here right now the closest thing FIU has to entertainment is the Dolphin Mall. Nothing remotely close to an O'Brien's or Irishman. Not even anything close to Night Owl. You guys are pathetic.

Well that escalated quickly. Look man, if you're looking for bars and nightlife in Sweetwater, you're going to be disappointed. Miami-Dade offers a wide variety of entertainment. Dolphin mall is mostly restaurants but if you make your way to town and country mall, in Kendall, you'll find a Blue Martini, a World of Beer, and a couple of other restaurants.

The real partying happens on Brickell in downtown and in Miami Beach. Tons of bars on Brickell. And Miami Beach is the club capital down here. You can also go to Coral Gables for some nice gastropubs and bars.

FIU is located in West Miami-Dade County. Sweetwater just happens to be right next door. There is still PLENTY to do down here. If you can't find a party in Miami, maybe you're the one that's "pathetic."

PS: UM is in Coral Gables. By no means is that a "college town." Big metropolitan areas like Miami aren't usually what I think of when I think of college towns. I think small cities that cater only to students and faculty like Gainesville.

Of course there's stuff to do in Miami. Although I don't remember much, I was at the W with some friends having a good time last night. But my point is, man, it would be nice to have the convenience of a college bar around the campus (especially because my gf's car is in the shop right now and we have to walk everywhere). The closest thing you guys have to that is a Chile's To Go in the student union. Nothing like Coyote Jack's here or even Whackadoo's at UCF. I guess what I'm trying to say is there is no sense of a college atmosphere. Yea I get it, major metropolitan areas aren't supposed to have college atmospheres but I think USF has done a nice job with what they got. Why can't FIU do the same? Oh that's right, because you guys suck.

No clue what that means, I'm assuming it's good though!  ;D

The pork from this place is off the charts good.

hahaha awesome reply. Exactly what I was going for.

"Que rico" loosely translates to "So good"

"Meng" is how Cubans who can't speak English say "Man"

So…

So good, man.

Hehehe…
That reminds me of back when Peyton Manning was thinking of coming to Miami (Yeah right?!), Dan Lebetard on AM 790 suggested someone make him a Dolphin Jersey with "Peyton Meng" on the back…for a complete Miami welcome.

As a Cuban-American, I almost busted a gut laughing when he said that.

BTW…Cuban in Palm Beach/North Broward in my preferred order:
1)Havana's…WPB
2)Little Havana…DFB
3)Cuban Cafe…Boca

Havana's on Forest Hill and Dixie is the real deal.
