Teaching hospital is approved!!!!!

I was there in the mid 80's…because the school was so small and not policed we could basically do whatever we wanted…there were a lot of freshman transfers this year because they were bored…Boca has changed since the 80's and it's geared toward retirees, the wealthy and families; not night life…we used to be able to go to Boca bars near the beach…now the kids have to travel farther

IBM is a distant memory. On their former site is the T-Rex center and Blue Lake. They are filled with mostly hi-tech companies. The airport is busy and has expanded a few times. No talk of moving it west, besides Boca is built out about as far wast as it can go. The newer jets don't make too much noise. My home is under the flight path every so often and you hardly notice it.

They also just finished two new hangers, but what would be interesting is to see a School of Aeronautics at some point.

This is getting way off topic from the hospital but I really don't know what resident students today want from the university. I grew up in the shadows of UF. The biggest thing by far that Gainesville and UF was known for back then was the bar scene, not campus bowling. Thats my memories of college. Thats what most of the FAU students did on the weekend. Most of us, like accounting students (me), didn't have time to play on school nights. Like I said, it is a sign of the times. Kids these days need to be provided something to do.

It looks like Brogan is addressing this issue. You can't fix it overnight though.

Maybe some current students who are board members can discuss life on campus. ON A DIFFERENT THREAD.

That would be pretty cool. The FAU engineering dept has always been well respected. It was when I was there. Many of the engineering majors were getting high paying offers long before graduation.

This is good news except for more traffic on campus and could move us even further from a traditional campus. Have we been approved for a full 4 year medical school or are we just the first two years in partnership with Miami?

To answer you question and get this back on topic, yes 4 years has been approved. Read the article again, it is mentioned.

Isn't it great that FAU has a medical program and will have a teaching hospital without costing the state $1/4 billion.

That should be worth a few points in Tallahassee.

The lease agreement has been approved for the new hospital and construction will begin in 2008.

The article is very positive about the whole thing. Especially since this won't cost the state anything and the university will have a state of the art teaching hospital on the campus. :) This should evolve very easily to a full med school.

FAU, Boca Raton Community Hospital approve-campus teaching hospital

Florida Atlantic University and Boca Raton Community Hospital approved a lease agreement Wednesday that secures a new home for an on-campus teaching hospital, which will allow the expansion of the existing two-year medical program to four years and permit students to complete their residencies in Palm Beach County.

"We see this as a whole transformation of both healthcare and biomedical research in Palm Beach County," said Dr. Michael Friedland, vice president of medical programs at FAU. "With Scripps leading biotech development and this four-year medical education program, it's not hard to imagine that we could become the leader in South Florida – in both healthcare and biomedical research."

FAU will continue to run the medical program, which began in 2004, in partnership with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

However, students will no longer have to do their clinical rotations at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, as they must now. With the new $638 million hospital, scheduled to be built on 38 acres on the southeast corner of FAU's Boca Raton campus, students will be able to complete their clinical training on the grounds.

"I just think it's a very exciting time to be here," Friedland said.

FAU's Board of Trustees and Boca Raton Community Hospital's Board negotiated a 67-year, $28 million lease, said Paul Risner, general counsel for the Boca Raton Community Hospital.

Groundbreaking for the hospital is expected in late 2008, with completion expected in 2011, Risner said. Further state approval is needed as the planning progresses, he said.

"It's full speed ahead for us," he said.

The 530-bed, private room hospital would help create about 50 full-time faculty positions and offer training for about 125 residents, Friedland said.

The new hospital also would boast student conference rooms, resident sleeping quarters with lockers and a medical library with IT systems.

The design also calls for standardizing the room layouts, with equipment and features placed to help prevent incidents such as medication errors and falls, said John Reiling, project manager for the new hospital.

"Standardized facilities help people make routine activities more accurately," he said.

A $638 million hospital on campus! That must be close to the total value of all current buildings on campus. Will students ever receive FAU medical degrees or will they still be UM degrees?
