Florida Tech is 'ready for some football!'

FIT is a great institution. There are about 6000 local students. Many are student-athletes and the school is competitive in the sports it competes in. However, there is a huge difference between a school like FIT and FAU. FIT is very focused on academics and will never be near the enrollment of FAU or the other public institutions in the state. There isn't much a of a benefit to going D1 at FIT as compared to a large public school. Brevard is also less dense than South Florida. It will benefit the institution to sponsor the additional sport, but I'm not sure the benefits are as clear when you consider upgrading all sports from D2 to D1.

There would also need to be major investment in all facilities to move up to FCS. For example, the gym is nice and similar to FAU's, just on a smaller scale.

I think it would be impossible for FIT to join the Sun Belt in its current form – it's a much smaller, more intimate institution. Stop by the campus and you will understand. It's possible for excellence at FCS and D2 as well. Eventually, it might make sense to be in the same conference as Stetson and Jacksonville at the FCS level, but it would have to make sense for all sports.

Future Florida D1 FBS schools might come from those that replaced us and UCF in the A-Sun that eventually add football – possibly UNF and FCGU. However, both recently moved (or are currently transitioning) to D1 non-football from D2. There is a long way to go to first being established in D1, then adding FCS football, and finally upgrading to FBS.
