I had heard that as an option also. The old guard will be rolling in their graves if that happens (they might already be). To me it would absolutely awful to use the Star Wars thing. I don't get it nor do I want to. I agree that it is time for a change at Ole Miss, but the new mascot needs to represent the university.

I gotta agree with Owlcountry here.  This is pathetic.  It was wrong a couple of years ago when some of the other teams had to change their mascots, and it is wrong now.  If you don't like something, then don't look at it, read it, watch it, or listen to it.  But leave it be.  Sure, people can take it as some sort of racist idea, but it's a freakin mascot.  I guarantee you the black football players on the team don't care that Col. Reb gave them a scholarship, do you?

We'll be next, PETA already tried to get PBA to lose the sailfish mascot, I bet we're next on they're list.

I support keeping the reb. (And for what its worth, I was born a yankee ;D)

The students voted to change it, not some "board jerks" or bored jerks, I'm not exactly sure what you were getting at here. But at the end of the day, the students, who are paying the athletics fees, decided they wanted a change, so they should have it. It's the equivalent of FAU's student body voting to change our name to the Blue Wave.

There are obviously enough people who find it offensive, or just not their style or this vote wouldn't have gone through.

Yep, I would be embarassed if FAU's mascot represented me in that manner.

Lets not forget what we are talking about when we say "Southern Heritage" we really mean "Southern White Heritage".  Ole Miss, desegregated in 1962, required US Marshalls, Army MPs, and the Mississippi National Guard to quell riots by whites.  2 died and the Governor of Mississippi was sentenced to jail time for his role in attempting to prevent the desegregation. This whole thing might seem petty in 2010, but the Confederate flag and Colonel Reb represent the Southern White Heritage, a heritage that institutionalized racism and hate.

You couldn't be more wrong to associate the Confederate flag with nothing but hate is naive. A lot of this comes from pressure from the outside media making students feel bad about their schools southern heritage, it come from dumb people who don't understand southern heritage. And the students didnt vote against Colonel reb he was abolished 5 years ago this was just voting to get a new mascot …….they knew they weren't getting Colonel reb back

Look at the picture posted and now imaginge yourself a blank man or woman in that picture, what would you be thinking now?

The flag does represent a small part (actually only five years) of southern history but has since been used mostly by hatemongers to intimidate.

It has it's place in museums as a part of history but not in everyday life and definately not as the flag and/or mascot of a major university in the 21st century.

P.S. - I am white and and lived in the deep south for 40 years
