Tennessee fans are beyond irate over the news that Greg Schiano. So much so that security is getting involved.

There are a number of Tennessee fans protesting around the Knoxville campus. And there is enough concern for Tennessee officials to call security to the athletic center, according to Louis Fernandez. of WBIR in Knoxville.

This has been an absurd and wild day for Tennessee. Surely they could expected some brush back, but not of this magnitude.

Schiano went 68-67 in his time at Rutgers, but had just one season with more than 10 wins. The Volunteers are coming off their worst ever season, after they went 4-8. I bet there some Tennessee fans out there that are longing for the less chaotic days of Lane Kiffin.

Is ESPN is reporting it's not going to happen due to the fan base reaction. Looks like they'll be searching for a new AD as well….

One would thing this reaction would turn off future candidates…..

I am not but Greg Auman from the Tampa Bay Times is saying the overwhelming negative reaction from Vols fans is sparking an exit strategy before he is even hired!

Now Schinao is seeking a buyout payment?

Per footballscoop.com:

Tennessee: Sources tell FootballScoop Tennessee and Greg Schiano had an understanding of terms earlier in the day but UT is now backing out of the agreement. Greg Schiano’s side, we’re told, is seeking compensation in connection with breaking the agreement. This is…not normal. Update> ESPN and Yahoo are both now reporting UT has backed out of the agreement as well.

Crazy stuff!

Dr Riordan will be teaching this in his MBA Sports Management program for years to come. It’s really fascinating the level of ineptitude that has gone on here and how an internet witch hunt has led to this for a candidate.

I don’t think Schiano is a great hire and that likely led to the uproar but when the mob got a granule of negativity on him (which many sources prove to be unwarranted) they took it and ran.

This is quite similar to the Geo Group debacle we had here years ago, albeit at a bigger scale. Had the administration stepped up this afternoon and said “we fully vetted Schiano and the accusations being brought up online are totally false, he’s our guy and will lead us back to prominence” they could have salvaged this. But they all hid in their offices and let it take a life of its own and are now left to clean this up. Who wants that job? No one will be good enough for those delusional fans.

It all happened pretty quickly too - when did word get out that UT was offering Schiano, Sunday morning? And by Sunday night it was dead.

It wasn't just the Twittersphere; even the Tennessee politicians got involved, which is pretty impressive.

Tennessee fans as mentioned are delusional.  They expect a Nick Saban (or I guess Gruden) and were probably not going to be happy even if they landed Chip Kelly or had to "settle" for Dan Mullen.

Schiano from an X's and O's perspective is IMO a pretty good coach.  Looking at his Rutger's record and calling him a .500 coach doesn't tell the story - making Rutgers even competitive much less a bowl team took a lot of effort.  Getting them on the map (and the TV market) is what ultimately landed Rutgers into the Big 10, even though he was gone by then.  I think this was more the public outcry that Tennessee really didn't want the guy and their existing players were scared of a hard-@$$ coach coming in.  To me it shows how inept the administration has become - did they not ask around or at least float his name?  I had not heard even a murmur about him until it was announced they were trying to finalize negotiations.  Who the heck are they going to realistically expect to land now?
