West Virginia to Big-12 Next Season?

West Virginia and the Big East Conference verbally agreed to a settlement Thursday night that will allow the Mountaineers to exit the conference for a sizable payout and join the Big 12, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The settlement is expected to include a cash payment of $11 million from West Virginia as the Post-Gazette reported Wednesday, but the Big East's total draw in the resolution could climb to as much as $20 million, said sources, when factoring in other terms of the settlement.

An exact final figure could not be confirmed Thursday night.

Paperwork has not been drawn up and signed, but sources indicated a formal announcement could occur as early as today. The agreement had been on the table for more than a week.

The resolution brings to an end more than three months of litigation since West Virginia announced plans Oct. 28 to join the Big 12.

Yup! C-USA + Boise and SD State which makes 0 sense. At this point even if CUSA merges with the MWC I think we'd be better off in the Sunbelt. The new CUSA won't be anything special if they merge. Plus we wouldn't have to travel to Hawaii or Nevada for games

Man, $11 mil - $20 mil to leave? Think of how many scholarships they could give with that money! Crazy that they are willing to pay that much to just play in a different conference.

Finally someone sees the light over here… CUSA loses it's major basketball contributor of Memphis, and the football teams that are remaining are really no better than the Sun Belt teams. The TV contract will change, bowl tie-ins will change, so might as stay in the growing Sun Belt.

Which is why I feel the best way for the Belt (and the Owls) to improve is to grab S. Miss, E. Carolina, Marshall, UAB and Tulane while CUSA is reeling and desparate. I don't think the admions at those schools really think playing Fresno and Wyoming is better and us - AND WAY more expensive considering all the non-reveneue travel that would come with a CUSA/Mt. West merger. That would bring the Belt to 15 so also add Ga. State to also grab the Atlanta media market for the conference. A geographical fit for UAB and a competitive partner with S. Alabama. This would then becomne the true Southeastern or Southern conference! Market that way too!

Go after them Belt and we IMMEDIATELY improve both the Belt's and FAU's stature!
