Rusty Smith drafted by Titans in the 6th round!

I'd have to agree with Rook1, I think that Rusty will beat out Simms.  After that infamous bucs game where he lost his spleen, he hasn't been the same.  I was never a big fan of Simms anyway, but the fact that he took a beating that day and still finished out the game did make me respect him.  I didn't follow the Titans much last year, but I remember that Vince Young was chock full of issues at one point, that tells me he's unstable and probably won't last in the league much longer.  Collins seems like a good guy to have Rusty learn from, so hopefully he gets the spot and we end up getting to Watch Rusty on Sundays.

Re: Rusty Smith drafted by Titans in the 6th round!

VY is a fan favorite in Nashville, so he'll get every chance to succeed.

He still has a lot of growing up to do. Hopefully, he'll improve, so the Titans don't worry so much about a "backup" plan.

Even if they do get rid of Collins, I think they'll bring in another veteran to replace him, due to Vince's vulnerability and propensity to make "rookie" mistakes.

It'll be Simms or Rusty for that 3rd spot— just my opinion from listening to the sports media around here.

By the way, driving home from Nashville the other day after running a half-marathon, they had interveiws with Rusty and Schnellie on 104.5 The Zone, the bigtime sportstalk station out of Nashvegas. Rusty handled himself very well– answered the tough questions like a pro.

That's because he is a "PRO"… ;D

Tennessee Titans play the Dolphins in Miami this season on Sun, 11/14. Would be cool to see Rose and Smith in uniform.

This Levi kid doesn't realize its about more than college stats?  Its about your size, arm strenght, ability to read the defense and your potential.  Kid was lucky to get drafted IMO.  He sounds like an idiot.

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.

Well I guess I'll be following the Titans this year - 1st time ever following NFL… I purely watch FAU and several other college teams!  Outstanding work, Rusty!  Married and in the NFL the same year.  Life's changing quick - for the better!  You deserve it.  GO RUSTY!  GO OWLS!!

Re: Rusty Smith drafted by Titans in the 6th round!

Hey guys, Titans fan here. One of your posters stopped by titanscentral w/ a link so I figured i'd drop by for a quick run down.

Rusty has found himself in what could very easily be an ideal situation. He was hand picked by Dinger, the Titans OC, as their developmental QB and b/c of this he won't really be looked at to compete w/ anyone this year. Simms and Collins will compete for the #2 spot and how VY plays will factor heavily into that decision. VY has pulled a 180 and really drastically improved his work ethic and has put in a ton of work these past couple years so I expect him to impress in camp which means they could lean heavily toward a younger Simms over an older and expensive Collins but if they're a little leary of VY, Collins could stick another year in which case Simms would probably get the boot. But if they're leary of VY and Collins continues to show his age then Simms could stick as well which would mean they'd cut Smith as they try to sneak him onto the practice squad.

Odds are Smith's spot will depend heavily on players at other positions. Its going to be a numbers game depending on if they feel like they can keep 3 QBs.

WR: Titans have some old draft picks at WR that could force the Titans to keep them in Paul Williams and Hawkins. Paul Williams is back from being cut last year and put on the practice squad. Then there's Dominque Edison and this year's rookies D.Williams and Mariani. D.Williams is pretty much a lock. Mariani could very easily stick if he can show talent returning punts. Ideally 2nd year man, Kenny Britt will win a starting spot and 2nd year Titan Nate Washington can show some consistency and win the other spot which would free them up to cut Gage. All in all, if they keep 7 WRs then they're going to get into a numbers crunch at another position.

RB: The titans finally got rid of LW but now they've got 2 UDFA RBs that could force a decision in Blount and Stefan Johnson. Ringer will be the # 2 but they'll probably keep at least 3 RBs and possibly 4. If they keep 4 RBs then once again, they're going to get into a numbers crunch at another position. Sadly Rose's only real shot of making the team is if Hall gets injured. They won't keep 2 FBs and Hall's spot is set in stone. His best bet is to wow the coaches so they cut him and keep him on the practice squad until Hall's contract is up and then force a decision… or stand out and get another team's attention.

S: Griffin and Hope are the starters. Fuller is the primary backup but Hope is showing his age. Donnie Nickey is a special teams captain but no one wants to see him on the field. They drafted 2 safeties in Robert Johnson and Myron Rolle. Fuller is safe b/c he's their starting nickle corner which means they're already in a numbers crunch as Johnson and Rolle fight off Nickey.

There could potentially be a numbers crunch at OL and DL as well. Could be some tough decisions at LB and corner but not nearly as tough as WR, RB and S.

So Smith making the team will depend heavily on other players b/c its going to come down to a numbers game. They'll do their best to keep him as the developmental guy but don't be surprised if you don't see him at all in the preseason and he ends up being cut b/c they could very easily try to hide him and sneak him onto the practice squad. Don't expect him to compete w/ anyone this year. But either way if they're able to keep him, whether its on the roster or on the practice squad, expect them to sign a UDFA QB next year that will compete w/ Smith as the #3. If he wins out, he'll probably compete as the Titans primary backup in his 3rd year.

This is exactly what they did the year after Steve McNair clinched his starting spot. But that year they drafted Kevin Daft and later brought in a UDFA known as Billy Volek to compete for the 3rd spot. Daft ended up losing the spot and Volek later became the team's #2. When Steve was traded to the Ravens, Volek was expected to become the starter while VY sat the bench and learned but he lied to and pissed off the coaching staff and got himself traded.

Probably more than you guys wanted to know but hope it helps. G'luck to Rusty and Rose. Hope it works out.
