Re: 2012 Sun Belt Men's Basketball - Week Seven

News from around the league….

Atop the Sun Belt Conference Men’s Basketball standings early in the season, WKU will play a pair of marquee games this week against teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament last year as SBC action continues with 15 games on slate.

The Hilltoppers (8-3, 2-0 SBC) are one of four unbeaten SBC teams in league play and will square off against VCU on Tuesday and Louisville on Saturday. VCU reached the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament last season, while Louisville earned a trip to the Final Four. WKU will enter the contests having won six of its last seven.

WKU is off to its best start since the 2006-07 campaign and are led by sophomore T.J. Price who averages 16.9 points per game, fourth-best in the SBC. Jamal Crook pours in 14.5 points per game and leads the league with a 2.1 assist:turnover ratio. As a team, the Hilltoppers hold a league-best +7.4 rebound margin which ranks 35th nationally.

South Alabama (5-5, 2-0 SBC) is tied for first with WKU in the SBC East and is coming off a 74-69 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday. The Jaguars will resume conference play on Saturday with a showdown against UALR (8-5, 2-0 SBC) at home.

Augustine Rubit tallied his second consecutive double-double with 23 points and 19 rebounds to lead the team over the Islanders. His five double-doubles on the season is tied for the most in the SBC, and his 19 rebounds were the most by any player in the league this season. He needs just three points to become the 14th player to reach 1,000 points in school history.

UALR enters the matchup after a 1-1 week, defeating Tulsa and falling to Louisiana Tech. The Trojans will look to grab their first true road win of the season on Saturday, but are 7-2 at home. Freshman John Gillon and junior Will Neighbour lead the team in scoring with 11.5 and 11.1 points per game, respectively.

Strong perimeter defense has been one recipe for success for the Trojans as they hold opponents to a league-low .268 percent from beyond-the-arc which is good for 18th in the country. On the flip side, Gillon shoots .440 from long range and has drained 22 three-pointers on the season.

Middle Tennessee (7-3, 1-0 SBC) is the only other undefeated team in conference play and will host Tennessee State on Tuesday before being put to the test on Friday with a road game at Vanderbilt. The Blue Raiders will look to shake off a tough defeat at Belmont last week. MT will put its 4-0 home mark on the line against Tennessee State.

MT has out-rebounded its opponent in seven of 10 contests this season. The Blue Raiders also rank first in the SBC in scoring defense, limiting the opposition to just 61.7 points per game. On the offensive end, senior Marcos Knight propels the offense with 12.4 points per game, while senior James Gallman, Jr. has nailed 13 of 24 three-pointers to lead the league with a .542 percentage.

Hey Rick,

Are you sure the Stetson @ FAU game is at 6pm, not 7pm?

My email mentioned there were some tickets misprinted and said the game is at 7pm.

Per www.fausports.com  the game is at 7 p.m.  I am assuming the schedule above was copied from the Sun Belt and it is a Central Standard Time.
