Sun Belt Football: Games for Week of 09/17/2011 - Owls Off

FINAL:

UCF 10  FIU 17

Ok, this was a quality win for FIU - period…I know a lot of folks don't care for them, etc, but you have to give credit where credit is due…UCF has a damn good defense, and FIU did a good job of exploiting it well enough for the W.

In other action:

I am seriously eating crow right now after talking up about how the Toppers could be the surprise team of the league, yadda yadda yadda…totally getting smoked by Indiana State!

My prediction is Cristobal is gone before the bowl season.

Honestly to even try to keep up with them now you would hope so because they are doing things I thought we would be doing now. Very disappointing - but I give them props for such a quick turnaround.

We BETTER have a coach locked in before that happens or FIU will own us in the pick.

I hear Cristobal to UGA is the rumor today….then those bastards take my dream coach Mike Leach  :'(

Re: Sun Belt Football: Games for Week of 09/17/2011 - Owls Off

FINALS:

Indiana state 44  WKU 16

Although somewhat close in overall yardage, only the score at the end matters.

The Sycamores employ a balanced attack, featuring 210 yards on the ground coupled with 227 yards through the air, to upset the Toppers, who fall to 0-3.

WKU leading rusher Bobby Rainey gains 105 yards on 23 attempts, while the Toppers get 241 yards from the passing game.

Nicholls State 21  ULL 38

The Cajuns tap two QB's in the win, but only toss it around 15 times on the day. None was as beneficial as Blaine Gautier's (3-4-0) 60 yard TD strike to Javone Lawson.

ULL went to the ground 39 times for 146 yards and a modest 3.74 yard average, but used nine different ball carriers behind a "mix it up" play calling strategy.

FINAL:

UNT 0  AL 41

The mean Green net just 184 total yards for the game, but did manage to get nailed with 16 flags for 154 yards.

On the other side, the Crimson Tide pounded out 356 of their 588 total yards by foot.

The final score could have been worse, as Alabama missed two FG attempts.

Last, but not least…

FINAL:

Troy 28  Arkansas 38

Troy puts up, IMO, the best showing for the week, keeping a respectable pace with the #14 team in the land for the most part.

The Trojans out gain the home team 450-449 in overall yardage, but fall victim to 150 yards in penalties to that of 54 for the Razorbacks. Although not a game changer, when it's all said and done missing two FG's didn't help either. Momentum might have gone their way a bit more.

Troy's air raid was good enough for 349 yards, and that will be a force to be reckoned with down the line.

Overall, the Belt goes 2-5 for the week.

Sun Belt Players of the Week for Week Three

Offensive Player of the Week

Corey Robinson (Troy, So., QB)
Robinson established new career highs for pass attempts (63), completions (36) and rushing yard (33) in leading the Trojans to within 10 points of the 14th ranked Arkansas Razorbacks. His 373 passing yards were the third most of his career and he moved up two spots on the Troy career passing list, becoming just the sixth player in school history with more than 4.000 career passing yards (4,357). His three TD passes moved him into sixth on the Troy career list with 32. Robinson helped Troy out-gain the Razorbacks, who came in ranked 8th in the nation in total offense, 457 yards to 454.

Co-Defensive Players of the Week

Isame Faciane (FIU, So., DT)
Isame Faciane didn’t fill up the stat sheet against UCF (9/17), but he had arguably the biggest play of the game when he picked up a Jeff Godfrey fumble and returned it 51 yards for a game-tying touchdown with six seconds left in the first half. He finished the game with just one tackle, but his play inside freed up linebackers Winston Fraser and Jordan Hunt who combined for 21 tackles vs. UCF.

LaDarrius Madden (Troy, Sr., DB)

Making his first start of the year, Madden had a huge game against No. 14 Arkansas, recording six total tackles, including 1.5 TFL. He also had a 53-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter to bring the Trojans within 10 points in the game and then recovered a fumble later in the fourth quarter to give the Trojans a chance to draw within one score in the game. The interception was the fourth in 14 games in Madden’s career and the fumble recovery was his third.

Special Teams Player of the Week

Melvin White (Louisiana-Lafayette, Sr., DB)

White made the momentum turning play in Saturday’s game with a 68-yard blocked field goal return for a touchdown. The play came with the Cajuns facing a Nicholls State field goal opportunity, in a tied game midway through the second quarter. The kick was blocked and White scooped the ball and raced into the end zone. The Cajuns starting cornerback also made three tackles, 0.5 sacks and forced a fumble on the Nicholls 17-yard line that led to ULL’s first score of the game. The Cajuns outscored the Colonels 24-7 after the blocked field goal.
