The Sun Belt After the Dominoes Fall

Interesting though is that ECU is the odds on favorite in news articles to go into the BigEast but they have the weakest TV market, far lower even than any current conference member! Actually nothing to add there but football and proximity.

By the way SeminOwl, great work on the research into the TV markets! Thanks for sharing this with us, some of the stuff we post gets to the attention of and used by the decision makers, beleive it or not!

Its because people think that the conference cares about past athletic performances by the football and basketball teams.  If you look at the Big 10's expansion discussions the last thing they care about is the past performance of the schools football and bball teams.  They would take a West Virginia or a Louisville if thats what mattered.  They care about TV markets first and foremost and then academics…but we are pretty much up to par with most Big East schools as far as academics goes.

Re: The Sun Belt After the Dominoes Fall

No problem GeorgiaOwl!

I think Temple is sort of a shoe-in..they are a Football only member in the MAC with a huge Market so it wouldn't cause any real problems over there at the MAC.  The 3 Florida teams make sense…giving the Big East every major market in Florida except JAX (and even that might have to be included with all the alumni from the 4 schools).  Also might give the Big East auto qualify for Orange Bowl

The 5th and final team is a question mark.

Do they go for the Cleveland market with Akron (and give an in-state rival to Cincy)?
Or perhaps a different Ohio team like Toledo, Bowling Green, Ohio?
Or do they stay East and go with Buffalo for a potential rivalry with Rutgers/UConn,
Or do they go way out to Memphis for the Basketball and avoid the MAC reallignment? (leaning towards this)

I think the academics thing is probably a question mark… but I don't think we are lower than say UCF and USF.  They are simply more popular and thus have higher admission standards.  That does not equal better academics in and of itself, and I think the rise of the 'State Colleges' in Florida is giving FAU enough breathing room to really up the admission standards significantly in the next few years.

I think we just have to hope that they don't pull a UConn on us and grab UMass from FCS (Boston TV Market) and bring them up to primetime. Then who knows what might happen.

In terms of size, how does our Palm Beach market compare to Miami and Orlando? I would assume Miami first, Orlando second, Palm Beach last.

Academics I doubt we are on par with many BE schools except USF. We need to at least ascend to Tier 3.

We're a project, no doubt. That's why selecting the next FAU President is so critical. A school like UF can probably function on cruise control but we need a builder here.

Miami and Fort Lauderdale are considered one Media Market and is 17th, but obviously is shared by both FAU and FIU.  FAU adds in Palm Beach which is the 38th Media Market.  Orlando is 19th.

Re: The Sun Belt After the Dominoes Fall

The NCAA currently has a ban (or something?) on any moves from FCS to BCS status. That, together with the lag time schools have to go through (provisional status?) could stop any thoughts in moving a UMASS into the BigEast for a while.

A moratorium? I think you're right. Not sure for how long though…. when it expires.

Re: The Sun Belt After the Dominoes Fall

The Moratorium was 4 years long effective August 9, 2007.

So if the Big East really wanted UMass they could set it up so that they would have 12 teams starting with the 2013 season (2011 and 2012 would be transition for UMass).
