Troy hires offensive coordinator

Troy makes Brown youngest FBS coordinator

TROY, Ala. (AP) Troy coach Larry Blakeney has promoted assistant coach Neal Brown to offensive coordinator, making the 27-year-old the youngest coordinator in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Brown, whose promotion was announced Friday, has spent two seasons working with the inside receivers in the Trojans' spread offense. He replaces Tony Franklin, who left after the season to run Auburn's offense.

"One of the priorities for me in this transition was to maintain stability in the offensive scheme that Tony Franklin installed in 2006," Blakeney said. "Neal played in this system at Kentucky and in a similar system at Massachusetts, he has coached this system for several years and he is a bright young coach who has impressed me in the two years he has been here."

Brown, who turns 28 on March 11, is just weeks younger than San Jose State co-offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo, who was born Jan. 23, 1980. The youngest FBS defensive coordinator is Buffalo's Charlie Jackson, 31.

"The only thing that will probably mean is a little bit of publicity for the program, which is good," Brown said.

Blakeney also announced Friday that former Troy player Kenny Edenfield will return to coach inside receivers after six seasons as North Alabama's offensive coordinator.

Outside receivers coach and special teams coordinator Shayne Wasden was promoted to assistant head coach.

Re: Troy hires offensive coordinator

Word is, Blakeney is going wild on the recruiting trail and will announce some great catches (4- and 5-star players) from jucos and high schools on Feb. 6. Some current Trojans are helping to bring in topt alent from their respective schools.

Blakeney always responds well to adversity (losing coaches to big time programs).

The new OC knows the spread well, and the new receivers coach, from North Alabama, is a national championship team Troy grad who has torn up D-II for the Lions.

Things are perking up in Troy.

Good, I hope Troy continues to get better with us...we need people to start respecting the SunBelt more.

BMarkey: Do you see troy taking a step back in terms of how good the team was last year? Or maybe up a step?

I doubt that Troy will improve after losing an All-Conference QB, a potential 1st round draft pick CB/kick returner, and your offensive coordinator. That said, Troy always seems to have a tough team, so they'll likely continue to stay in the SBC mix…fighting for second place behind the Owls! ;D

Word is, Larry Blakeney is tearing up the recruiting trail. He always works harder when faced with adversity.

Troy is fine, talent-wise. There are at least three QBs that could be stars (or do nothing). A couple had offers from SEC and other major schools. There are five QBs with playing potential on the squad, and word is, at least one JC transfer will be coming who knows the spread well.

The new OC knows the spread well and learned it under the traitor Franklin. Blakeney grooms assistants so well that they get big jobs elsewhere (unfortunately).

There are a couple of good RBs supposedly committed and again, some quality JC defensive and linemen. The O-line was young and did very well and the receiver corps (which is amounts to Troy's running game as well) is stacked with youngsters, including one of the stars of that Hoover high school football show from ESPN a couple of years ago. That guy will be the new kick return star.

Troy needs a new punter.

The team was much more than Omar (but he was a great icing on the cake) and will bounce back nicely.
