Id say loss of scholarships to say the least. Its going to be interesting to see what BS they try to pull. They are in deep Poo.  :-\

they lost some already…i think 3…not sure though…

so you heard they could lose even more than that??

that would sink em…

I have not heard anything officially.  I get a lot of my info from my father who is a pretty big U.of Tenn booster, so he knows the system, know what i mean ;). He has a lot of ties to Miami and south florida recruiters.  Most likely fiu will have additional loss of schollys, loss of post season play which really wouldnt matter in their case and or loss of tv games. Apparently this is a pretty big deal.  It all depends on how good Fiu handles the situation and how much the NCAA feels like using fiu as an example of what not to do.

Re: When will FIU win again?

FIU already has cut scholarships in every sport in a proactive way.  Actually, the infractions were self reported right after new AD took over, since he wanted to start with a new slate.  The NCAA is responding to findings and reports originally made by FIU to the NCAA.  Pete Garcia has already taken measures and cut scholarships, fired some administrators, and added personnel in areas where it was evident there was a lack of resources. From what I know, the NCAA takes all these actions (including self reporting) into consideration whan handing out penalties.

I don't think it's a matter as complicated as you would want to implicate, according to what I can gather from some people inside FIU athletics I happen to know.  However, to say or implicate I..or anyone else …really know or have a clear idea of what's coming down, is purely speculative, in my opinion.  It's not a matter of "pulling out BS", as you want to describe it.  It's just stating their point of view, regardless of what biased bystanders might want to happen.  FYI, FIU's 2005 infraction was for extra practices and taking attendance at voluntary conditioning meetings.

I don't know where you've read the FIU situation to remotely compare to what happened at either SMU…or Texas Pan American as well, for that matter.  They are very different situations, according to people I've read that I do place a lot of credibility and knowledge of how the NCAA works.  There is a poster in the Sun Belt, Arkstfan, that follows all the intricacies of the NCAA and Conference related matters as well as anyone in the nation, I would say.  This is what he had to say in the Sun Belt board regarding a question similar to what a poster here implies:

"UTPA had people deliberately cheating and some turning a blind eye. The leadership's suggested penalty to the NCAA was death in order to get out of the remaining years on their contract with their coach.

FIU's first go round was a coach violating rules before he had gone through the NCAA rules workshop. Not sure what exactly is happening this time but sounds like a failure to make sure academics and athletics were properly exchanging information.

Very different from the UTPA situation."

Re: When will FIU win again?

Yeah i wrote the comment about comparing fiu to the smu situation before i personally looked into things more deeply.  I read it on some board, cant remember which one but we all know how factual forums can be. They are mostly full of hear say info passed down through three  or four people before it gets to a forum.  About my BS comment, well that just comes from a personal dislike of FIU and a majority of its fans that i have encountered or witnessed. I openly admit i have no factual info backing that statement, purely emotional.i guess i put it that way because i believe that you do the crime you do the time.  You guys will be dealt a lighter hand because you reported the findings yourself. No i dont have inside info from fiu athletic staff, so i dont know the exact word of mouth of whats probably going to go down.  I get my info from UGA and UT staff and boosters that i know personally or are related to. After bringing up the topic with a UT recruiter that is a close family friend, i came away from the convo with the impression you guys may be in for more than just losing a few schollys.  According to him athletic staff, at least at UT are drilled over and over about eligibility rules.  As part of the athletic staff it is one of the top priorities to make sure all NCAA elgibility rules are followed and precise records are kept on everyone. He admitted every few years you will have one or two athletes that something gets overlooked, But 40? Its hard to believe shady things were not going down. He then preceded to tell me what would go down if the same situation were to happen at UT.  We'll just say if what he thought might happen with the NCAA it might be a rough few years for fiu that would also have a negative effect on at least 2 to 3 years after a punishment has been dealt for all sports that are involved. As he put it "Its the schools responsibility to make sure thinks like that never happen, they'll get more than a slap on the wrist for that mess."  Even with fiu reporting the findings and trying to go ahead and remedy the problems the NCAA isnt going say oh well, looks like you handled it how bout we just let bygones be bygones.  The fact is, is that fiu cheated. Knowingly or unknowingly and there is probably going to be punishment coming that you guys will think is too harsh.

Fiufanatic i think its clear that i dislike fiu but i hope you understand im not writing this trying to bash fiu. Im just stating what might happen coming from a source where its the persons job to know and follow the rules of the NCAA.  I hate to see any program and its athletes get punished for something they were not even involved with.  I do hope you guys can get out of this without too much damage to the program.  I mean you guys are like our little sister, you know how it is when someone messes with your little sister.  :P jk.  sorry i had to put that in their just because we are rivals.  I do wish you guys the best with this and just so you know Fanatic i do respect you as a fan and enjoy having you over here in TheOwlsNest.

Re: When will FIU win again?

i hate FIU - the institution, the university, the sport's program

but there is NO WAY in hell anyone here could be happy about what is going on there… no decent human being every should wish sanctions on hard-working athletes, who already have enough balancing school/athletics/social life… these kids (in EVERY athletic program across the nation) work their ass off and it's a shame when a program's "powers to be" mess it up, because the ones who pay in the end are the hard-working athletes

mario crisotbal walked into a tornado of disasters… i feel for him, as well… good, decent guy… he will hopefully turn that program around in the future

I was thinking the same thing. This coach had to walk onto a team with a terrible losing streak and now – potentially – has to recruit for that losing team without using scholarships.

Re: When will FIU win again?

Great couple of posts there.  I have a feeling he knew the situation before signing on becoming the coach, though.  Pete Garcia took over in early October, and Cristobal in late December, after Garcia had already contacted the NCAA with the internal "self reporting" on this issue.

For the record, I don't even dislike FAU, let alone 'hate them', although some times I get a bit irked with some of the most "radical" posts here, I have to admit.  However, although I would support FIU even if to the detriment of a fellow school (FAU or any other), I do believe there is power in unity of these two institutions.  Even in the academic field we have joined forces before to land some grants and other stuff…As I used to discuss with OG Owl….we are joined at the hips for a period of time…even if some FAU and FIU fans don't like it.

Re: When will FIU win again?

MC did walk in into a bleak situation and knew the situation going-in, like fanatic mentioned.  The panthers did lose a lot of players to graduation leaving players with very little experience to step-in - FAU had to go thru the same trials & tribulations just not to this extend.  FIU will need a few more years to turn the ship around, like many have mentioned there are plenty of athletes in the state of florida to go around.

We need to have FIU step-up - for the conference, if the SB will ever get any type of respect, it's not enough for the teams at the top to compete, but all teams in the conference need to do better overall.

Let's hope not. Honestly, who wants to be the team that loses to the team with the nation's longest winning streak? If ASU loses then they're going to come into Lockhart on Nov.10 in a state of revenge and that makes things more difficult for us than they need to be.
