The Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team placed two players in double figures in a balanced offensive attack that led to a 76-50 season-opening victory over Warner University on Friday night at the FAU Arena in Boca Raton. The Owls won their season opener for the third consecutive season.

“We did a lot of good things tonight, but also found some areas that we still need to work on,” said Chancellor Dugan, FAU’s head women’s basketball coach. “We will learn from this game and build on it going forward.”

Owls put up a fight but fall 73-51 to the Wolverines. FAU was within eight points with 11 minutes remaining but ran out of gas down the stretch.

"I was real pleased with what I saw in the first half, but we've got to build on that."

The Owls moved to 2-1 on the year tonight after picking up a 77-52 win over Webber International (0-4) at FAU Arena.

Fourteen first half turnovers by the Warriors helped FAU rattle off a 27-6 run, allowing the home team to take a comfortable 47-29 lead into the break.

“We were able to play within ourselves tonight and once again had a balanced attack,” said Head Coach Chancellor Dugan.

After a 6-of-12 display from behind the arc in the first frame, the Owls struggled in the second half going 0-of-9.

"There are still areas we need to improve on to meet the challenges that are ahead this season", Dugan said.

Florida Atlantic outpaced Webber 48-34 in rebounding thanks to Chenise Miller's game high 13 grabs, and were paced offensively by Latavia Dempsey's 13 points off the bench.

A 68-46 win over Bethune Cookman on Sunday has Florida Atlantic off to it's best start since the 1991-92 season.

The Owls (3-1) were able to assume a 39-15 lead at the break behind a 55.6% showing from the floor, and were dominant off the glass at 42-23 for the contest.

Sophomore guard Latavia Dempsey paced the Owls with 15 points on 4-of-9 shooting off the bench while Bethune-Cookman (1-2) was led by Jasmine Elum's 15 points as well.

FAU will next travel for a three game weekend stint in the BTI Tipoff Classic to be hosted by the University of Kansas. Up first is UPUI this Friday at 5:30 p.m.

"We may be off to a good start, but we’re far from satisfied with our overall play", said Coach Chancellor Dugan. "There’s room for improvement and we’ll start that process in practice this next week."

One place that will need immediate attention is that of ball handling, as the Owls turned it over 26 times against the Wildcats.

The women's basketball team led 19-18 with 9:55 remaining in the first half against IUPUI tonight during their first game of the BTI Tipoff Classic at the University of Kansas. But that would be the last time, as the Jaguars (2-2) took control thereafter behind a 5-of-10 performance from long range for the period, en route to an eventual 74-64 win.

After being down 42-32 at the break, FAU would trim matters to single digits at 44-52 with 13:45 remaining in the contest, however that was as close as they would come. Free throw shooting played a part in the failed comeback attempt with the Owls managing just a 21% effort for the frame (3-of-13).

Chenise Miller (14), Teri Stamps (12), and Dalita Scott (10) were all in double figures for FAU, which out-hustled the Jaguars on the glass 41-38, but saw the ball stolen 11 times.

The loss snaps a two game win streak for Florida Atlantic (3-2), who returns to the floor tomorrow to take on the Lamar Cardinals at 2:30 p.m.

"For whatever reason, we didn't play with the type of intensity needed to win on the road. We need to get things straightened out before tomorrow's game," said Head Coach Chancellor Dugan.

Re: 2011-12 FAU Women's Basketball Schedule

After chipping away at a 12 point deficit to trail by just one in the final seconds, fortune would not favor Florida Atlantic as the Owls dropped their second straight in a 66-61 loss to Lamar University.

“We were trying to go inside on our final possession, but it wasn’t there. We just didn’t execute the play", said Dugan.

FAU (3-3) had a tough time keeping control of the basketball while committing 19 turnovers.

Chenise Miller and Lativia Dempsey paced the Owls with 13 points each, and April Goins added 11 points and a team high eight rebounds.

The Owls will close out their three game stint at the BTI Tipoff Classic tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. against the University of Kansas.

Florida Atlantic (3-4) saw a 28-8 deficit midway through the first half trip up any hopes of pulling off the upset against host Kansas in a 82-63 loss for their final game of the BTI Tipoff Classic.

After trailing 46-24 at intermission, FAU outscored the host team 39-36 in the second frame.

"We were more aggressive in the second half and the girls never quit", said Owls Coach Chancellor Dugan.

April Goins (13), Teri Stamps (11), and Chenise Miller (11) saw double digit efforts offensively for FAU. Miller was also named to the All-Tournament Team after posting a 12.7 ppg average for the weekend.

Aishah Sutherland's 21 point, 11 rebound effort paved the way for the Jayhawks, who are undefeated at 6-0 on the season.

Turnovers continue to be a problem area for Florida Atlantic, with 24 for the contest.

The Owls will enjoy some time away from the court before returning to action on December 10th at 3:00 p.m. when they host Saint Louis University at FAU Arena.

Florida Atlantic shot 41.7% from long range in the second half on Saturday against Saint Louis, but it wasn't enough to erase a 7 point halftime deficit as the Owls fell to the Billikens 70-63 at FAU Arena.

Saint Louis took control in the first period with a solid shooting performance 48.3% clip from the floor while the Owls struggled to keep pace.

Terri Stamps had 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting for FAU, and Kimberly Smith and April Goins added 13 and 10 points respectively.

The Owls controlled the glass 44-36, but struggled at the free throw line going 56.3%.

Mallory Eggert notched a double-double with 14 points and 14 boards for Saint Louis.

FAU will be back in action on Wednesday at 7:00 when they play host to North Florida of the Atlantic Sun conference.
