Re: 2013 FAU Softball Schedule & Results
The FAU softball team swept a doubleheader from Middle Tennessee 13-2 and 5-3 on Tuesday.
Florida Atlantic (16-18, 5-3) won the first game 13-2 in just five innings.
The Owls scored five runs in the first inning. Carnesha Thompson scored the first run by beating out a throw to the plate on a Melissa Martinez grounder. Stephanie Call drove in the next two runs on a double up the middle. Sacrifice flies by Shelby Knox and Alison Milam accounted for the other two runs.
Melissa Martinez scored on a Blue Raider (2-26, 1-6) error in the top of the second. MT got on the board in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Niki Campbell. FAU scored five more runs in the top of the third. Call and Thompson had RBI during the rally with MT defensive miscues accounting for the rest of the scoring.
The Owls added a run each in both the fourth and fifth innings on a bases loaded walk by Kathryn Spack and a solo homerun by Jordan Stovall, respectively. The Blue Raiders scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, but a groundout to short ended the game.
Game two was much more competitive, but FAU once again got on the board early with Melissa Martinez driving in Thompson and Call plating Christina Martinez on a sacrifice bunt to put the Owls ahead 2-0 in the first inning. In the fifth, Shell doubled to drive in Alexa Ballard and two runs scored on a Thompson sac bunt attempt and MT error.
The Blue Raiders scored three runs on a wild pitch and two-run double by Campbell. FAU had the bases loaded with one out in the seventh, but a fielder’s choice and popup to short ended the threat. Call retired the first two batters of the seventh before issuing three straight walks to load the bases, but was able to strike out the final batter to end the game.
FAU will attempt to complete the sweep in the final game of the series, at 2 p.m. eastern on Wednesday.
