Strong free throw shooting coupled with solid ball distribution propelled FAU women's basketball to a 81-64 win over UNC-Wilmington on Sunday afternoon, marking their best start since the 1990-91 season.

The Owls led the entire contest and received double-digit scoring performances from Latavia Dempsey (17), Takia Brooks (16), and Chenise Miller (15). Miller was one rebound shy of a double-double effort with a game high nine grabs for the contest.

Florida Atlantic (9-3) dished out an impressive 17 assists overall, while connecting on 16-of-19 second half attempts at the line.

After establishing a 20-10 advantage just past the midpoint of the first period, FAU would increase the margin for a 39-26 lead at intermission.

The Seahawks (1-11), who were just 1-of-8 from long range, got within 8 points on two occasions thereafter, but that was as close as they would come.

The Owls drained 12 of their 32 attempts from beyond the arc, tying the third-highest makes and second most attempts in program history.

Bethune Cookman will visit The Burrow on January 2nd at 7:00 PM before FAU opens conference play on the road against East Carolina the following week.

Four players reached double figures as the Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team reached double-digit wins on Thursday, topping Bethune-Cookman 81-65 in the Burrow.

The Owls (10-3) continue the best start in the program’s Division-I history as they prepare to enter Conference USA play next week. With the victory over the Wildcats (3-11), the Owls have won a school-record 10 non-conference games.

Seniors Chenise Miller, Latavia Dempsey, Kimberly Smith and Shanequa Schrouder each scored double figures for the Owls, who have won 10 of their last 11 games.

Miller led FAU with 14 points, five rebounds and three blocks in the contest. Her 89 career blocks places her in fourth all-time at FAU. Dempsey scored 13 points, reaching double figures for the fourth-straight game.
Smith flirted with a triple-double, posting 11 points, eight rebounds and a career-high eight assists while Schrouder earned her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Wildcats led by as many as six in the first half and took a two-point lead into the break after FAU’s Takia Brooks hit a three in the closing seconds to cut into the margin. FAU would open up the second half with a barrage of shots including a pair of three-pointers by Dempsey and Smith to take a two-point lead that they would not relinquish.

The Owls went on a 10-2 run midway through the second half to pull ahead to a 59-49 lead. FAU forced 14 turnovers in the second half and capitalized on those for 17 points. The Owls also out-rebounded BCU 30-17 in the second half for 16 second-chance points.

FAU opens Conference USA play on the road at East Carolina (12-1) on Jan. 8. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. in Greenville, N.C.

League leader East Carolina (13-1, 1-0) slid past Florida Atlantic 61-58 on Wednesday night in the Owls' Conference USA debut.

The Pirates held FAU to a season low 58 points off a 29.1% overall field goal mark.

East Carolina didn't fair much better, but were able to out hustle the visitors 25-13 on the offensive glass, and 56-39 overall, as well.

Latavia Dempsey posted a contest best 18 points and Briah Blakely (12 points) and Kimberly Smith (11 points) added double-digit showings.

After a see saw affair in the second period which saw six lead changes and four ties, Smith's long ball made it a one point game with :20 to play. However, ECU's Janesha Ebron then went to the free throw line thereafter, hitting a pair for the final score.

Florida Atlantic (10-4, 0-1) will next return to the home court to host Rice on Saturday at 5:00 PM.

Big win for the women's team today against Rice…nearly hit the century mark! Game release via SID Brandon Goodwin:

Florida Atlantic University senior Latavia Dempsey shot a phenomenal six 3-pointers in the first half to push the FAU women’s basketball team to a 97-69 win over Conference USA rival Rice on Saturday.

FAU (11-4, 1-1 C-USA) tied a school record with 14 made 3-pointers in the game and shot 11-of-15 from beyond the arc in the first half. Coming into the contest, Rice (8-7, 1-1 C-USA) led the conference in 3-point defense, allowing opponents to shoot just 25.9% beyond the arc.

Dempsey ended the night with a career-high 28 points and an FAU Arena record seven 3-pointers. The senior shot 9-of-11 from the field in the first half and scored 18 points before missing a shot. Her performance is the best for an FAU player this season and the best since Breana Turner scored 32 points against Louisiana-Monroe on Jan. 30, 2013.

FAU held a 66-28 advantage at the half in the first meeting between the two programs.
Senior Shanequa Schrouder turned in her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds, leading FAU to a rebounding advantage of 34-32 over Rice (5-7, 1-1 C-USA).

Kimberly Smith had another solid outing, scoring 15 points while grabbing six boards and dishing out four assists. Freshman Shaneese Bailey posted 11 points and six rebounds while fellow freshman Kat Wright also scored 11.

A second half surge led Florida International (8-8, 2-1 C-USA) past the Owls 96-88 in a high scoring affair at FAU Arena on Wednesday night.

Florida Atlantic had no answer for C-USA Preseason Player of the Year Jerica Coley, who drained 68.4% of her attempts for 35 points (28 second half) and saw reserve guard Taylor Shade not far behind with 25 points off a 9-of-13 effort.

The Owls led 37-36 at intermission, and traded leads with the Panthers until the 12:30 mark of the second half.

With FAU trailing, a Shaneese Bailey jumper made it just a one point game with 5:20 to go, but FIU slowly built out the decisive margin thereafter.

Four Owls were in double figures, including Latavia Dempsey (18), Kimberly Smith (17, season high), Takia brooks (16), and Shanequa Schrouder (12).

Smith and Schrouder each had a game best seven grabs, although Florida Atlantic (11-5, 1-2 C-USA) was bested 41-33 overall.

FAU next travels to Old Dominion for a 7:00 PM contest on Saturday.

Old Dominion's size proved too much for the Owls on Saturday night, handing them a 80-44 loss in Norfolk.

The contest saw a 24-24 tie at the 7:48 mark of the first half when Kimberly Smith connected on a three pointer to pull FAU even. However, from that point on, the Monarchs (9-9, 2-2) built what would be a 12 point advantage at halftime and never looked back.

The Owls were outmatched off the glass 55-32, and gave up a 40-18 advantage in the paint for the night.

Connecting on just 3-of-32 (9.4%) attempts from long distance, FAU posted their worst showing on the season.

Shaneese Bailey and Smith led the offense with nine points each.

After starting the year 10-3, Florida Atlantic (11-6, 1-3) has since dropped three of their last four games.

They will look to get back on track against Louisiana Tech on Wednesday in Rustin. Tip off time is 7:30 PM EST.

The Owls drop a tough one at LA Tech on Wednesday night…game release via SID Brandon Goodwin:

Senior Briah Blakely scored a career high 22 points, but the Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team fell 64-63 in a heartbreaker to Louisiana Tech on Wednesday.

The Owls (11-7, 1-4 C-USA) fell behind early as Blakely scored the team’s only two points in the first 8:20 of the game in Ruston, La. FAU started 1-of-15 from the field, allowing LA Tech (6-12, 1-4 C-USA) to pull ahead to a 12-2 lead.

The Lady Techsters would extend the lead to 12 points before FAU cut the margin to 27-20 as Kimberly Smith hit a jumper late in the first half.

The Owls went on an 8-0 run early in the second half to get within one point. Blakely scored 13 of FAU’s first 17 points after the intermission, including a 3-pointer with 10:49 to play to tie the game for the first time.
Four minutes later, Blakely stole the ball and scored on a fast-break layup to give FAU its first lead of the game with 6:29 remaining. Latavia Dempsey would then score seven straight points to give the Owls their largest lead of the game at 53-46 at the 4:55 mark.

FAU would miss its next six field goal attempts, allowing the Lady Techsters to retake the lead for the final time.

Takia Brooks scored on a fast break layup with 11 seconds left to pull FAU back to within two points. Whitney Frazier would make a pair of free throws with five seconds left to seal the victory. Smith made a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but was unable to draw a foul for a chance to tie.

Blakely shattered her previous career high of 13 points, set at North Texas last season. The senior recorded four rebounds, three assists and three steals to go along with her team-high scoring line. Smith tallied 11 points, seven rebounds and four steals while Dempsey tacked on 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Owls racked up 19 offensive rebounds, the most in a road game since Dec. 7, 2012 at Mississippi State. FAU forced 24 turnovers, marking the 16th game that the Owls have forced at least 17 turnovers.

The Owls will return home to host North Texas on Saturday, January 25. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. in the Burrow.

The women's basketball team snapped a three game losing streak on Saturday in a 82-69 win over North Texas at FAU Arena. The victory was the 400th in program history.

Despite being outshot (-15.4%) and out rebounded (38-28), the Owls cashed in off 24 Mean Green turnovers to the tune of 30 points.

The team continues to look to the long ball for production with Chenise Miller out for what could be the rest of season. The senior is said to be working on eligibility issues and has not played since the Owls' 81-65 victory over Bethune Cookman when they were 10-3. Since then they have posted a 2-4 mark.

UNT (8-11, 2-4) led on three occasions in the first period before the Owls rattled in a 47-38 advantage at intermission.

The Mean Green would go up by a half dozen midway through the final frame, but Florida Atlantic (12-7, 2-4) closed matters out behind a 26-7 run thereafter which was fueled by 12 free throws and six makes from the floor.

FAU's Morgan Robinson paced the offense with a career and game high 18 points (6-of-7 3PT) and Kimberly Smith added the contests second best showing with 17 points to accompany nine rebounds. Shaneese Bailey and Briah Blakley notched 11 points a piece to round out the team's double-digit efforts.

The Owls will have the mid week off, next facing FIU on Saturday, February 1st at 6:00 PM in Miami.
