The Owls shot 38.7 % from long range, but were just 13-27 from the free throw line, and helped the Blue Raiders pick up their 10th road win of the year while missing four of their last five attempts there.
Florida Atlantic led 15-10 early before MTSU (21-4, 10-1) went on a 24-5 run for a 34-20 advantage with 5:46 left in the first period.
However, the Owls would surge thereafter, regaining the lead briefly before the Blue Riders made the last shot for a 41-39 half time edge.

FAU (14-13, 4-10) won the rebounding battle for the first time in a while by out hauling the Thundering Herd 40-35 and also kept the defensive pressure on by forcing 22 Marshal turnovers that were driven by 13 steals.
The Owls trailed 22-27 at the 3:36 mark of the first period before closing the stanza with a 15-3 run to lead 37-30. Marshall would get back to within five immediately after the start of the second half, but Florida Atlantic embarked on 30-10 spree thereafter for their largest margin and the game was never in jeopardy.
Florida Atlantic connected for 10 three pointers, leaving them just seven away from establishing a new Conference USA record for a season (234).
Kimberly Smith had 26 points on 9-of-18 shooting, and Takia Brooks added 23. Shaneese Bailey pulled down a game high 15 rebounds.

Florida Atlantic made seven 3-pointers behind a 41.2% effort for the tilt, moving them into first place in the C-USA record book for most in a season with 234. The original mark was held by DePaul University, who sank 233 during 2002-03.
FAU never trailed in the contest and tallied 11 steals, which was just above their average of 10.7 per game (3rd C-USA). The Owls (15-13, 5-10) also shot 20-of-27 at the line (74.1%) including a 12-of-14 effort in the first half.
Takia Brooks netted a game-high 24 points on 6-of-11 shooting, and was 9-of-11 at the stripe.
Texas San Antonio was down by as many as 14 points in the second half, but rallied back to within a possession at 70-67 with 13 seconds to play.
Despite missing two lay-up attempts thereafter, FAU was able to absorb all but one second of the game clock before Latavia Dempsey (15 points) was fouled and hit one of two to seal the win.
UTSA (13-15, 4-11) connected for a lay-up as time expired for the final tally.
The team will conclude the 2013-14 regular season at home against one of the league's top teams in UTEP (23-5, 12-3) on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.

The two teams traded blows over the first eight minutes of the game, and it was two-point lead (21-19) for FAU with 12:19 to play in the first half. Things changed in a hurry, with the Owls hitting four threes to fuel a game-changing 14-2 run over the next three minutes.
The Miners (23-6, 12-4 C-USA) halted the sequence with a triple from Telles but the damage had been done. The deficit was 17 (49-32) at the break, and the short-handed Orange and Blue squad (leading scorer and rebounder Kayla Thornton missed her third straight game) could get no closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
The Owls finished at 42.5 percent (34-of-80) from the floor, including a 20-of-47 showing from three-point range. It was a nearly flawless night of execution for FAU, who dished out 17 assists and committed just two turnovers.
Latavia Dempsey (24 points), Takia Brooks (24 points), Kimberly Smith (19 points) and Briah Blakely (12 points) led the charge for FAU (16-13, 6-10 C-USA), with the quartet doing most of its damage (19-of-37) from three-point range. Brooks also grabbed 10 rebounds to secure a double-double while also dishing out five assists.
The Miners, who connected on 41.4 percent (12-of-29), in the opening frame ran out of steam in the second stanza. UTEP slipped to 28.9 percent (11-of-38) after the break and were out-scored to the tune of 15-1 in points off turnovers.
While official pairings are still awaiting release due to a five way tie for 9th place, the Owls initially appear to be in a duel with Marshall for day one of the 2014 conference tournament.
Florida Atlantic downed the Thundering Herd 87-68 last Wednesday in Huntington.

UTEP couldn’t withstand the barrage of a Conference USA record 20 three-pointers in a 98-62 loss at Florida Atlantic Wednesday evening.Posted On: Mar 5th 2014, 11:13 PM #329359
What a game! This UTEP team had lost just 5 games all year, and this was a blowout.
For those just waiting for Spring Football, there are a lot of other great sports going on right now. Last night I took in a couple innings of the 1st Softball game against Marshall, then headed to the Burrow and watched this incredible Women's basketball game as they destroyed UTEP, then walked over to the baseball stadium and watched the Owls kick some Boston College butt, and then went back to the Softball stadium and enjoyed watching the Owls finish off Marshall in the 2nd game. Long day. Great time of year to be an Owl Fan!
