Saturday's release via SID Justin Johnson…

The Florida Atlantic softball team split its doubleheader with Louisiana Tech on Saturday, winning the first game 7-2, but falling 3-1 in game two.

In game one, the Martinez twins combined to put FAU (23-16, 6-5 Conference USA) on the board in the top of the first when Melissa doubled in Christina to give the Owls a 1-0 lead. In the top of the second, it was Christina Martinez’s turn to drive in a run. Her single to left allowed Carnesha Thompson to score and put FAU up 2-0. Jordan Stovall smacked a double to the gap in left that plated Melissa Martinez and made the score 3-0 in favor of FAU in the top of the third.

The Lady Techsters (12-22, 3-8) answered in the bottom of the third on an RBI single that cut the deficit to 3-1. The score remained the same until the top of the sixth when Thompson cleared the fence in left to reestablish a 4-1 lead for the Owls. Louisiana Tech scored in the bottom of the inning to trim FAU’s advantage to 4-2.

In the top of the seventh, Christina Martinez led off the inning with a triple and scored on a Lindsey Shell base hit. Later in the inning, Shelby Knox singled off of the third base bag, driving in Shell and Melissa Martinez to complete the scoring. Amanda Wilson retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning for her seventh win of the season. FAU won a conference series opener for the first time this season.

In the nightcap, Louisiana Tech staked itself to an early lead with Bianca Duran’s three-run homerun in the bottom of the first inning. The Owls were unable to gain any traction, going hitless until the sixth inning. FAU’s only run of the game came on Melissa Martinez’s solo homerun that led off the seventh inning. Laura Mann drew a one-out walk to bring the tying run to the plate, but FAU couldn’t complete the rally. Kylee Hanson struck out five, but took the loss.

The two teams will meet in the rubber match of the series at 2 p.m. eastern on Sunday.

FAU dropped the final game of their weekend series against LA Tech 4-0 on Sunday in Ruston.

The contest was scoreless through four innings of play, but the Lady Techsters (13-22, 4-8) executed a squeeze play to break the ice 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth.

LA Tech finished off the scoring efforts later in their next trip to the plate, netting three more runs behind a three hit effort which was aided by an FAU fielding error.

Samantha Messer (11-5) took the loss for the Owls (23-17, 6-6) tossing six innings while giving up two earned runs off six hits.

The Owls, who saw only two hits for the day, had the bases loaded in the top of the fourth with two outs, but could not cash in.

Florida Atlantic will host rival FIU next Saturday in double-header action. Game one, which begins at 4:00 PM, will be televised on FSN.

The Florida Atlantic University softball team split a doubleheader with rival FIU on Saturday.

Game One was a pitchers' duel with FAU's Samantha Messer trading shutout innings with FIU's Corinne Jenkins. The Owls (24-18, 7-7 C-USA) had runners on first and second with two outs in the fourth, but Delaney Rickey, pinch running for Laura Mann, was thrown out at home trying to score from second on an FIU error.

FIU (24-15, 6-5) had runners on first and second with just one out in the top of the seventh, but a foulout and fielder's choice ended the threat. In the bottom of the inning, Shelby Knox singled to center before Sarah Howell entered as a pinch runner. Mickey Bell followed with a base hit, and a Panther error allowed Howell to advance to third. That brought Carnesha Thompson to the plate. Thompson successfully executed a squeeze bunt that scored Howell and gave FAU the 1-0 victory. Messer threw her fifth shutout of the season to improve to 12-5 on the year.

In the nightcap, FIU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI double by Shelby Graves. The Panthers added to their lead in the sixth inning on a two-run single by Bre Kaye to stretch the lead to 3-0. FAU responded with a run in the bottom of the inning, when Melissa Martinez doubled in Lindsey Shell to put the Owls on the board, 3-1. After holding the Panthers scoreless in the seventh, Knox walked to lead off the home half of the inning. The next two batters were retired, bringing Whitley Herb to the plate. Herb beat out an infield single, followed by a Christina Martinez single that drove in Knox. That chased FIU starter Graves from the contest, bringing game one starter Jenkins into the circle. She recorded the final out of the game, ending FAU's comeback hopes.

The Softball Team locked up a series victory against Charlotte on Saturday, winning both games…release via SID Justin Johnson:

Big days at the plate from Christina Martinez and Jordan Stovall helped the Florida Atlantic softball team take both games of a doubleheader from Charlotte on Saturday. FAU won game one 4-0 and game two 4-3 in eight innings.

In the first game, Martinez put the Owls (27-20, 9-8 C-USA) ahead 2-0 in the second inning, driving in Mickey Bell and Kathryn Spack with a double to left. A Spack triple had already pushed the FAU lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth when Martinez roped a triple of her own that scored Whitley Herb and gave the Owls a 4-0 lead. Kylee Hanson threw a complete game three-hitter for her seventh win of the season.

It was Stovall’s turn to spark the Owls at the plate in the second game. She singled to left in the first inning to drive in Herb. A Shelby Knox sacrifice fly later in the inning made the score 2-0. Stovall led off the fourth inning with a shot off the scoreboard in center to put the Owls ahead 3-0.

Amanda Wilson got into trouble in the circle on multiple occasions. In the third inning, the 49ers had runners on first and third with just one out after two FAU errors. However, a grounder to Knox at short resulted in the runner at third being tagged out, while the runner who started at first was thrown out trying to advance. In the sixth inning, Spack cut down a Charlotte runner at the plate who tried to score on a groundout to third.

The 49ers (15-20, 6-10) finally got to Wilson in the seventh, scoring three runs and putting the winning run on third base before she was able to end the inning. Stovall led off the top of the eighth with a single to left, before being replaced by Sarah Howell. Howell scored on a Knox sac bunt and Charlotte throwing error to give FAU a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Wilson walked the leadoff batter, before giving way to Samantha Messer. Messer, by way of a double play and strikeout, ended the game and preserved the win. Wilson’s win was her eighth of the year, while Messer notched her second save of the season.

The Owls will try for the series sweep at noon on Sunday.

FAU softball swept UTEP tonight in double-header action, and have now won five of their last six contests…release via SID Justin Johnson:

Jordan Stovall had a huge day at the plate as the Florida Atlantic softball team won both games of a doubleheader from UTEP on Friday. It was Senior Day as FAU’s four seniors were recognized before the first game. FAU took the first game 7-0 and game two 2-0.

In the first inning of game one, Stovall doubled down the line to score Christina Martinez before coming around to score on a Mickey Bell single, putting the Owls up 2-0. That score lasted until the fifth inning when Bell doubled in Shelby Knox. Sara Rotunno replaced Bell at second base, scoring on a Lindsey Shell single, making the score 4-0. The final run of the inning came when Whitley Herb beat out an infield single, allowing Kathryn Spack to score.

FAU (29-21, 11-9 C-USA) added two more runs in the sixth inning, when Knox doubled in Stovall, followed by a Carnesha Thompson single that plated Knox. Samantha Messer went the distance for her 13th win of the year.

Herb led off the bottom of the first inning of game number two with a base hit to left field. Stovall came up with two outs and smacked her second homerun of the season over the fence in left center. That was all the help Kylee Hanson would need. The freshman held the Miners (15-29, 7-10) to just three hits while striking out seven batters.

UTEP’s best chance to score came in the sixth inning, when the first two batters singled. Hanson was able to retire the next three batters to escape unscathed.

Stovall went 4-for-7 with three RBI and three runs scored on the day. The Owls will try for the series sweep at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
