The women's team is tourney bound after Saturday's win over Marshall!

Game release via SID Brandon Goodwin:

The Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team clenched a seed in the 2014-15 Conference USA Championship tournament with its 83-73 victory over Marshall at home on Saturday.

The Owls (13-14, 7-9 C-USA) made nine first-half three-pointers to amass a lead that Marshall (16-11, 8-8 C-USA) could not overcome.

Four FAU players reached double-digit scoring, led by Shaneese Bailey and Morgan Robinson with 19 points each. Ali Gorrell flirted with her second double-double against Marshall this year as she ended her night with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Ten of FAU’s first 13 shot attempts came from beyond the arc as Robinson’s first three-pointer put the Owls on top on the first possession. Marshall would hold its only lead of the night for just nine seconds before Malia Kency buried a long ball.

Seven of FAU’s first eight baskets were three-pointers off the hands of five different players, including Ali Gorrell and Wright each with two in that span.

FAU went on a 22-3 run to go up 25-8 just nine minutes into the contest. Marshall would whittle the lead down to 41-32 as Chelsey Romero made a layup with 20 seconds remaining in the first half.
An 11-2 run to open the second half gave the Owls their largest lead of the evening at 55-34 on a jumper by Gorrell with 16:10 on the clock.

Marshall chipped away at the lead to coax it down to nine with just over four minutes left, but free-throw shooting and clock management allowed FAU to gold on for the ten-point victory.

The Owls wrap up the regular season with a road trip to face UAB on Thursday, March 5 and Middle Tennessee on Saturday, March 7 before going to the tournament in Birmingham, Ala. starting on Wed., March 11.

Robinson and Malia Kency each hit three-pointers to open the game for FAU, but the Owls would make just two of their next 18 attempts from beyond the arc as UAB (16-12, 10-7 C-USA) posted 24 points in the paint.

The Owls lost their season finale to MTSU on Saturday afternoon…game release via SID Brandon Goodwin:

A second half slump by the Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team allowed Middle Tennessee to escape with a 73-60 victory in Conference USA action on Saturday.

The Owls (13-16, 7-11 C-USA) trailed by just two with 12:23 to play before missing their next ten shots from the field as the Blue Raiders (20-8, 14-4 C-USA) pulled ahead to a 17-point lead in the closing minutes.

Junior Ali Gorrell led FAU with her best conference game to date, scoring 25 points with eight rebounds. The guard started the contest 9-of-12 from the field and made three three-pointers. Gorrell crafted a stretch over the middle of the game where she scored 21 of FAU’s 26 points.

FAU held an advantage for much of the first half, going up by seven on a Gorrell layup at the 7:43 mark before the Blue Raiders tied the contest at 25 with 4:12 left in the frame. The Owls then pieced together a 9-0 run, including seven points by Gorrell, before MT cut the lead to 34-30 going to the half.

Gorrell scored 12 of FAU’s first 15 points of the second half, including a three-pointer with 12:23 left that cut the MT lead to two at 49-47, but the Owls would not make another field goal until the 2:56 mark. At that point, MT led 69-52.

After the Blue Raiders took the largest lead of the day on a layup by China Dow, FAU ended the contest on back-to-back three pointers by Malia Kency and Kat Wright to cut the final score to 73-60.
Wright tallied eight points, four rebounds and three assists in the game while freshman Sasha Cedeno also scored eight points.

FAU will travel to Birmingham, Ala. to take part in the Conference USA Championship tournament starting on Wednesday, March 11. Game times and pairings will be announced later Saturday night, pending results of other C-USA games.
