2017 Orlando Sentinel Countdown: Owls #106

Post

I am so glad the admin saw theat for FAU football am=nd maybe even athletics overall to grow or even survive, we could no longer "hope" FCS coaches ((Montana, Il. St. Youngstown St., Samford (not Stanford! )etc…) had to be replaced by proven FBS Coaches.

Now our coaches are from Bama, Ol Miss, Baylor, USC, UCF, etc….). they will Coach better and even more importantly, recruit better!!!!

Injuries.  Im not conviced Reggie will be back to form, that was a serious injury.  Beck - Serious Injury.

Center…?

We will see.  Could be a good unit…need health.

I didn't even mention other positions of question such as TE…

Harrison Bryant (SO), 6 Catches for 73 yards with 0 touchdowns. John Raine (SO), 2 Catches for 38 yards with 0 touchdowns. Dustin Bowens(JR), 1 Catch for 27 yards with 0 touchdowns.

Not exactly a notable bunch.

There are more position groups with big ?'s on this team then there are answers.

We have a talented group of running backs and corners….aside from that I am not sold on any of the other groups we have.  WR…we have some talent but who is proven?  Woods?  We will see…but he has a lot to prove.  Before you tell me how great he is please note he caught the ball 68 times last year and scored exactly 1 TD....1.  JUCO, I dont put stock into until they are here and playing.

What I saw from the new QB at the spring game was FAARRRR from encouraging.

We will see what the odds makers put our over/under at for wins in 2017...they are right a lot more than they are wrong.   I wouldn't be suprised to see them set the bar at 4.5.

Bain played great over spring from what a saw and heard. We are adding a JUCO center and get Richard Williams back from injury.

Kalib Woods only catching 1 TD doesn't mean anything that's a stat he can't control. Kamrin Solomon had a great spring and from the few practices I went to the hype was real he was just making plays.
That position will have 3-4 guys I feel comfortable playing every down and we are adding JUCO's.

Again it's hard to realize just how poorly we were coached last year.
They took the talented players we have and just ruined them on a weekly basis.

I was at the Kiffin luncheon after the spring game and that was brought up a couple times.  The format of the spring game limits everything for the  type of QB he is and his frustrations got the better of him because of that.  What you saw in that game will bear zero resemblance to what you will see on opening day.

GO OWLS!

Agreed, I was VERY GLAD the D played hard and very well, especially compared to the past few years. Aggressive D!!!! They WILL make mistakes but they will also increase turnovers greatly!

And the "scrimmage" rules DID favor the D with limits on the O and not having to ACTUALLY sack the QB, scoring system, stuff like that. But I was also OK with that as we HAVE TO SHOW THE O HOW IMPORTANT KEEPING POSSESSIONS GOING IS! Not just scoring O points, but keeping drive going, controlling the clock, resting the D…..

Now don't get me wrong, a quick score after a C stop or turnover is great and I personally don't think that hurts the D with less rest because they D is a least coming back on the field excited and confidant, looking to take the ball away again! AND the opposing O now faces more pressure ON ITSELF to respond and is more prone to making ANOTHER bad decision.

Think FAU O the end of the past season, just COULD NOT SCORE ENOUGH TO KEEP YUP AND THEY DID A PRETTY GOOD JOB TRYING IMHO BUT DC ROC'S D, WELL…….EVEN WITHOUT A STARTING QB BOTH ODU AND MTSU KILLED OUR "D"!

5.5 Wins
Trying to set odds on G-5 football though is hard.
The teams do not differ in talent that much and games all tend to be this Wild West  shootouts with not much seperating teams. For example ODU won 10 games last
year and I do think there is much difference between us and them.
La Tech and WKU were clearly better than everyone but after those teams I think everyone is kinda just jumbled in the middle.

Yea, ODU's schedule had 9/10 wins vs teams in the bottom 15.  10 wins is always great, but the schedule isn't ours this year.

I think Vegas takes both the Navy and Wisky games away from us and basically calls them guaranteed losses.  So really there are 10 games on the schedule in thier eyes.

I think the @WKY and @La Tech are both going to set us at 10 point dogs…

So there are 8 'competitive games' in odds makers eyes here.

I bet the number is 4.5-5.5 wins.  And again….those casino's are gigantic because they are more often right then wrong.

6 wins in 2017 would be a great accomplishment for FAU.

Kiffen needs to recruit the heck out of DL and LB at the JUCO level this year for next….we need to get our talent in line.
