"Up Close" with Daniel Joseph

danieljosephheadshot2010

At 25 years of age, senior defensive end Daniel Joseph is one of the oldest Florida Atlantic players on the roster, and that is one of the reasons why he starts at the right end position. Having played in 30 games throughout his career, Joseph has recorded 58 tackles and two sacks in the three years he has been with the Owls.

Graduating from Lake Worth High School in Lake Worth, Florida, Joseph didn’t sign with anyone after his senior year. Deciding to work and take care of his two children, Keke and Daniel Joseph Jr., Joseph waited four years before trying to come back to the gridiron to play. Joseph then walked onto the Owls in 2007, and played in five games that season, grabbing his first career tackle at Florida.

This year, Joseph will use his experience to help guide some of the new players on the defensive side of the ball during games, practices, and workouts.

Known for his long dread-locks, Joseph has been growing out his hair for seven years; which to some people is a surprise. The locks have given him a “predator” tagging.

Joseph recently sat down with us for “Up Close”.

Quick Hits

What is your favorite food?

“Hot wings, my favorite are from Wings Plus.”

What is your pet peeve?

“When people grab my hair, and just yank it for no reason. I can’t stand it, I know it’s an accident when it happens on the field
sometimes, but you should see the look on my face.”

Who is your current off the field role model?

“As far as football, it would have to be between the late Reggie White and Dwight Freeney. They both play my position, and White was a minister off the field and they classified him as a person that is nice off the field but mean in the game. Dwight Freeney is exactly my size and people say I’m too small for my position, but he goes out there and kills the game all of the time. As for off the field, I would have to say myself, because I have kids and I consider myself a role model for them and I would like for them to look up at me and see me doing the right things.”

What are you most proud of?

“The fact that I came back to school. After I graduated high school I didn’t step on the field or go back to school for four years, all I did was work. The fact that I dropped work and everything I was doing to just focus on football full time was a major step, so I’m pretty proud of myself for doing that.”

What is your major?

“Business Management.”

What is your Faith?

“Christian, Pentecost to be exact.”

Line of scrimmage

What aspect of your game do you feel is your strength?

“My quickness is probably my biggest factor, coming of the ball real quick, hit the edge real quick, and being able to work my hands real quick, is my biggest advantage.”

What aspect of your game do you feel is your weakness?

“My motor. My biggest weakness last year was, if I didn’t get one move right, I would pretty much just stop. I need to keep going.”

Down the field

Besides football, what brought you to FAU?

“It was close to home. Coming out of high school I didn’t want to leave the state, I was actually being recruited by West Virginia but the fact that I didn’t leave the state. Pretty much the fact that it was close and they offered the major I wanted to study in.”

What are your goals for the upcoming season?

“It may sound outrageous, but I want 20 sacks personally for myself. As a team, I want to win the conference, and I want to go to a bowl game.”

What game are you looking forward to the most next season?

“It’s between Michigan State and the Texas Longhorns. We played them before and lost. Michigan State was a close game; personally I think it was close even thought the score didn’t say so and the fact that we lost badly to Texas, I want another shot at them.”

What do you want FAU fans to know about you personally?

“I’m always on campus with class of football, so when I go home I just chill. I sit in the house and relax just because I’m always doing something.”
