The Jeff Van Camp era got off to a good start against the University of Alabama at Birmingham. However, the score didn’t show it as the Blazers defeated the Owls 56-29 at Legion Field. The defeat ranks third all time in points allowed behind 61 and 59 point showings by Connecticut (02’), Louisville (05’), and Florida (07’). The Blazers wasted little time showcasing the running game of quarterback Joe Webb and company quickly jumping out to a 14-0 first half lead. And the Owls continued their pattern of giving up long runs from center. Webb had a 65 yard scoring scamper untouched; and running backs Forrest and Slaughter added 46 and 45 yard gains as well. UAB amassed a season high 622 yards in total offense on the afternoon, as the passing game was clicking against the FAU secondary as well. Jeff Van Camp was impressive in his first start under center for FAU distributing the ball to eight different targets.  The red shirt junior had career highs in yardage, touchdowns, and completions while going 24 of 36 for 254 yards with three TDs. He also ran for 24 yards. His preparedness clearly showed. “Coach Schnellenberger has done a really good job of getting me some playing time (the last three years). We didn’t pull it out. I really wanted to get this win, but there’s always next week against Arkansas State”, said Van Camp. Trailing by 35-14 the Owls showed some fight, when the coaching staff elected to go for it from the Blazer’s 22 yard line with two seconds left in the first half. Van Camp threw a touch down strike to Jamari Grant as time expired, and Ross Gornall’s extra point pulled the Owls to within reach 35-21. But the Owls would reduce the deficit no further. “It was a very difficult game for us to endure. But we need to endure it. That was about the most complete offensive game played against us.  They didn’t give up the ball, and they only punted twice - at the end of the game”, said Coach Howard Schnellenberger. Alfred Morris led the Owls running game with 60 yards on 12 carries; but had his number called considerably less than previous weeks. Jamari Grant was FAU’s top receiving target with 71 yards on five catches. FAU now stands at 2-6 on the season, and must win all remaining games to become bowl eligible. They will next take on Sun Belt Conference opponent Arkansas State on Saturday, November 14th, at Lockhart Stadium.  Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00PM EST
