Owls move to 1-1 in Sun Belt play with 66-48 win over New Orleans

The Owls made a bit of history tonight while picking up their first Sun Belt Conference road win under Mike Jarvis, and defeating the New Orleans Privateers 66-48 at Lakefront Arena.

July 1st, 2010 marks the end of an era for New Orleans as a Division I team, as they will move to Division III status.

But the victory marks the first Sun Belt road win for FAU since defeating the Troy Trojans 99-93 on February 27, 2008.

FAU took a 34-28 lead into the break behind a torrid first half pace which caught the Privateers flat-footed.

New Orleans did not lead in the first period.

However, the Privateers outscored the Owls 16-7 to start the second period eventually taking their only lead on the night at 44-41.

It would be the only time the Owls trailed, as a 5-0 solo scoring run by Brett Royster would begin to build a game deciding 18 point advantage.

“It was a very good team effort.  We finished strong. The guys were executing at both ends of the court. I thought we played exceptional team defense in the second half. They might have been a little tired because we ran them so much”, said Jarvis.

The Owls spent the last few days practicing execution off of screen plays, and the effort clearly paid off in tonight’s win.

For the first time this season, FAU was able to string together two halves of play and dominate an opponent.

But it was the defense that showed up in a big way, holding the Privateers scoreless from the floor in the final 13:24 of the second half.  The Owls held New Orleans scoreless from long range (0-6).

Ray Taylor paced FAU with 20 points while Sanchez Hughley (pictured), and Brett Royster added eleven each.

The Privateers lost their first Sun Belt opener since 2001 (6-0).

FAU will take on the University of Miami this Saturday in the Orange Bowl Basketball Classic.  Tip-off time is 4:00PM EST.
