Talented guard could add to an already explosive backcourt

Florida Atlantic already has significant talent at the point guard position. But they will likely get a lot deeper and taller having received a verbal commitment from Dennis Mavin - a skilled 6’-2”, 190 lb point guard at The Rock School in Gainesville, FL - according to Rock Head Coach Justin Harden.

“Dennis had some other school options, but he really likes Coach Jarvis and appreciates what he is doing there and stands for”, Harden said.  “He told them that he really wants to go there, is verbally committed, and will probably sign in the next couple of days.”

Mavin will be on the Boca Raton campus Wednesday and Thursday with his immediate family for an official visit to meet with the FAU staff.

Recognized as the #16 prospect statewide according to floridahoops.com, Mavin joined The Rock School roster this past year in order to participate in a smaller school atmosphere that could afford him better academic standards and to help him grow as an individual.

He is currently listed as a two-star prospect by the scout.com recruiting network, but received a scouting grade of 85 according to ESPN. Players in this ranking have “potential to start or significantly contribute as a freshman for most top national Division I programs.”

Harden considers him highly underrated.

“He’s had a lot of interest from around the country. A lot of different coaches have called and asked about him”, said Harden. “I think FAU has got a steal, they got a very athletic, talented player.”

During his recruitment, Mavin initially received an offer from Marshall, but spurned later interests from Hofstra, Delaware, Troy, Northeastern, and Fairfield having settled on Florida Atlantic.

“He’s held strong and really wants to be with FAU”, said Harden.

Mavin is no stranger to The Burrow having practiced there last year during a tournament stint and is a close friend of current Owl Greg Gantt, who hails from Gainesville as well.
