Taming the Lions

Gantt, White lead the way as Owls register season highs against Florida Memorial

For a good portion of the contest, the Owls got their fair share of competition from a feisty NAIA Florida Memorial bunch tonight; at times too much.

But in the end, a 21-0 run by Florida Atlantic (9-6) in the second half would set the stage for a 94-76 rout before an announced crowd of 533 at FAU Arena.

Greg Gantt was impressive on both ends of the court, posting game highs in points (28) and rebounds (8), and accounting for all of the Owls’ five long balls.

“He’s been working on those in practice, and they are carrying over into the game”, said Coach Mike Jarvis.

After falling behind 20-10 in the first period, the Lions would keep things close at the break, trailing 52-47 as the teams headed to the locker rooms.

Florida Memorial (6-7) took advantage of a flat start to the second period by the Owls to lead 68-64 at the 11:41 mark.

However FAU then turned up the heat defensively, shutting FMU down for exactly 7:00 and rattling off 21 unanswered points in the process, to take full control of the contest and effectively put the game away.

A key factor in the run was Kore White, who was scoreless in the first half, but pitched in 14 points in the second period, while contributing a career high six blocks on the night.

With an up and down performance for parts of the season, it's hoped the trend will continue with the Owls heading into the breadth of the conference slate.

“That’s how Kore White can play”, Jarvis said. “We’re hoping maybe this will get him going.”

FAU’s 94 points sets a new season high, as did their 45 rebounds, and 12 blocks.

George Gray’s 27 points paced the Lions, who were outmatched down low surrendering 50 points in the paint.

The Owls resume Sun Belt play against South Alabama this Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at FAU Arena.
