FAU’s home opener did not go quite as the Owls had planned.

The defense that was the backbone through the first three games faltered against the run heavy offense of Middle Tennessee.

Though that didn’t seem to faze junior linebacker Andrae Kirk.

Kirk (pictured) ended the game with a career high 11 tackles, and the defense finished with two interceptions, despite the Owls falling short.

“We have play harder, faster and more gap sound,” Kirk said.

While the defense seemed off their game in week four, the Owl's offense showed up to play. Throwing for over 300 yards and putting nearly 200 yards on the ground: the Owl’s offense finally looked together.

“They played really well last week,” Kirk said of the offense. “It boosted our confidence in them knowing that they have our back.”

FAU will travel to Rice Saturday night, where they will play a similar opponent.

According to Kirk, Rice’s run heavy offense is similar to that of Middle Tennessee State. Rice leads Conference USA in total rushing yards and is second overall for total yardage on the season.

"They remind me of Middle Tennessee, and have a really good run game," Kirk said.

Leading Rice's potent run game is senior running back Charles Ross, who is averaging 106 yards a game.  

"It is really about us, how we come out and play, and how well we have prepared," Kirk stated.

Though Kirk seemed anxious when elaborating on the style of Ross, he is still mentally preparing himself.

"I like facing physical running backs like him,” Kirk said.

Kirk’s 24 tackles rank second on the team for the season.
