MID-WEEK MASH-UP: FAU vs Central Florida

FAU returned home to Boca Raton after a 21-42 defeat against #5 Ohio State in the opening weekend of the college football season. However, the Owls outscored the Buckeyes 21 to 17 in the final 3 quarters.

This Saturday`s matchup is arguably the biggest home game in FAU history. A ranked, in state opponent is coming to FAU stadium.

The Owls are 11-3 at home under Lane Kiffin.

Players are also very much looking forward to hosting such a big game on campus.

“Its going to be exciting playing our first home game with such a big audience”, WR John Mitchell told reporters on a conference call earlier in the week.

Below is our compilation of notables, and some video, as we reach the mid-point of 2019 Week 2.

Mid-Week Mash-Up

  • Key Match-up UCF has a very talented offensive line. The starting line includes three all-conference players from last year. RT Jake Brown, C Jordan Johnson and LG Cole Schneider. This will be a huge test for the FAU front seven. Last week, LB Rashad Smith led the way with 11 tackles and will be key in stopping the UCF ground game.

  • Breakout Candidate One of the offensive bright spots last week was WR Tavares “Pico” Harrison. The Miami-Dade County native caught 4 passes for 57 yards against a very talented Ohio State secondary. The senior has shown smooth hands since his arrival in camp and has a knack for yards after the catch.

  • Emmons Sidelined Lane Kiffin told reporters after Sunday that RB BJ Emmons had suffered a broken right ankle. Emmons was expected to be a part of the committee at running back this season. Carries were relatively split between senior James Charles and rising freshmen Larry McCammon III (photo above). The Emmons injury could open the door to speedy redshirt freshmen Malcolm Davidson.

  • Injury Report WR John Mitchell returned to the field last Saturday, catching only one pass. As noted, RB BJ Emmons is expected to miss significant time following a broken ankle. Starting linebacker Akileis Leroy was helped off the field in the 3rd quarter but returned and is expected to be a full go against UCF.

  • Keep an Eye On UCF featured two quarterbacks in last weekend’s blowout against FAMU. Starting the game was Notre Dame transfer Brandon Wimbush. In relief was true freshmen Dillon Gabriel who played significant snaps as the game got out of hand. Gabriel, one of the last remaining lefty quarterbacks, was the 2018 high school player of the year in Hawaii. Gabriel is a true dual threat quarterback who can extend plays. “Both have earned the right to play”, said UCF HC Josh Heupel told reporters earlier in the week. Don’t be surprised if the Knights play two quarterbacks this Saturday.
