Owl's Experimenting

Practice Notes for 8/19

FAU got creative on Monday, and tried some new things out on offense. Head coach Carl Pelini used both sessions of the two-a-day to experiment with using quarterbacks at different positions.

"One thing we were able to do today was start using some of the quarterbacks in some creative ways out at certain positions and in different packages and looking at ways to get two or three of them on the field at the same time," Pelini said.

According to Pelini all four quarterbacks on the roster saw time at different positions during the closed practice.

"They are kind of special in terms of our team, so there was a lot of that work today. Really all four of them got some skills with the ball in their hands so finding ways to put the ball in the hands was the focus," Pelini said.

Freshman DJ Juste saw time at slot receiver in Saturday's preseason scrimmage, but it appears he isn't the only signal caller that is being trialled at other positions. Upperclassman Melvin German (pictured above) and Jaquez Johnson were also shuffled around along with freshman Greg Hankerson.

Pelini and offensive coordinator Brian Wright are attempting to make the Owl's offense faster in 2013, and putting as many dynamic bodies on field is one of the goals.

"In the summer we talked about how athletic those guys were and ways we could use them creatively in different ways and the spread offense gives you the option to do that," Pelini said.

Miami and ECU Prep

With the season quickly approaching, the Owl's will soon turn their focus towards game preparation. Pelini said after practice that the team will start Miami installment early on Friday, but that won't be the only focus this week.

"We're going to get a little ECU this week – a little bit on Wednesday and a little bit on Thursday, but not a true ECU practice just working on getting some of the things they do offensively," Pelini said.

Because of the Thursday night date for week two with the Pirates, the coaching staff wants to get an initial look in before the short week.
