Practice Notes for 08-27-10

rossgornall08-27-10

FAU hit the Oxley fields for sunny skies, and an impromptu controlled scrimmage today that featured 98 plays on offense and defense and 35 on special teams. Normally, 35 is about what the squad would field in a full week on special teams. Here's what Coach had to say afterwards:

Most of the regular work was from the situational perspective designed to get different personnel on and off the field efficiently, with UAB scout formations mixed in as well.

Jeff Van Camp was pleased with the progress he saw today in comparison towards the first two scrimmages.

"I think we are making a lot of progress, we definitely needed this", said Van Camp. "Now it's just up to the play makers to make plays. Got to get them the ball, and let them score touchdowns for us."

Jeff Blanchard, who saw significant time in the backfield, certainly was making some plays with a long return during kick-off work, and a reception with 20+ yards attached after catch.

C Jimmie Colley was back at it but sharing snaps to ease his way back in.

“He was out number two candidate going into this fracas", said Schnellenberger. “We’ve got some kids that are coming back. We’ve got a lot of work to do in this coming week to set who’s going to be the starters and who’s going to play in the game. It’s still an open book.”

With all of the special teams work, there were some special plays with Travis Jones picking up a blocked punt and taking it back for a score and Alex Fick recovering an onside kick in the air.

Defensively, Demetrius Williamson had a near INT during scout work for the defensive first team, and was joined by Tavious Polo's batted pass.

Scores from today included, Xavier Stinson from five yards out, Travis Jones on a 15 yard scamper, a Ross Gornall FG from 30 yards out, a Byron Hankerson TD pass from Graham Wilbert, and Lester Jean's session ending 10 yard TD from Van Camp.

Quick hits:

“I was delighted she was there, and secondly she was having such a good time.”

- Schnellenberger on President Saunders' bonfire attendance

“He’s having a terrible time figuring out if he’s hurt or not hurt.”

- Schnellenberger on Avery Holley's sitting out today

“He’s doing a great job. He’s the receiver of the future.”

- Schnellenberger on DeAndre Richardson

The team will hit the field early tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
