Albaladejo goes 3-3 with three runs scored

Florida Atlantic held an early lead but could not hold on against #15 Miami on Wednesday night, falling 12-5 to the Hurricanes at Alex Rodriguez Park.

The Owls (15-9) struck first and scored two runs in the top of the first inning. After Mike Albaladejo singled and Andy Mee walked, Dan Scheffler pounded a double down the left field line to plate both runners and give FAU a 2-0 lead.

After Miami struck back to score a run in the bottom of the first, the Owls continued to pile on the offense when an Andy Mee RBI single made the score 3-1 FAU in the third.

However, the Hurricanes (17-7) stole the momentum back by scoring eight unanswered runs to take the lead for good. It started in the fourth when Miami posted three quick tallies on reliever Taylor Everist.  Everist (1-5) allowed three straight hitters to reach with a walk and a pair of home runs before finally exiting the game. The right-hander suffered his fifth loss of the season even though he did not retire a batter. Miami added two more runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to take control of the game with a 9-3 lead.

Scheffler continued his solid night in the seventh, when his two-run single gave him four RBI on the night and cut the FAU deficit to 9-5. However, two more runs by Miami in the bottom half of the inning put the game out of reach at 11-5.

R.J. Alvarez (1-1) posted a quality start for FAU and earned a no decision. The freshman right-hander lasted three innings and gave up just two hits and one run while walking one and striking out a career-high six batters.

The Owls will return to action this weekend when they will play host to Middle Tennessee for a three-game series beginning on Friday.  The Blue Raiders knocked FAU out of the Sun Belt Tournament last season. RHP Ryan Garton (2-1, 3.63) will start game one of the series for FAU.  He will be opposed by LHP Kenneth Roberts (1-1, 4.99) for MTSU. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the FAU Baseball Stadium.
