Scheffler hits two home runs on the afternoon

Junior first baseman Dan Scheffler connected on two home runs in an 11-7 victory over Boston College on Sunday afternoon. The victory gave the Owls the weekend series win by taking the last two games.

FAU improved to 5-4 on the season and scored double digit runs in consecutive ballgames. Boston College fell to 4-5 on the spring campaign. The Owls have now defeated the Eagles three times this season and outscored them 41-20.

Scheffler’s first home run tied the score with a two-run blast down the right field line in the bottom of the first inning. He finished the day with four runs scored and three runs batted in after going 2-for-2 at the plate.

FAU would take the lead an inning later on a bases-loaded groundout by senior center fielder Anthony Mesa that scored junior shortstop Nick Delguidice. Junior designated hitter Eddie Cassidy scored the second run of the frame on a passed ball to give the Owls a 4-2 advantage.

Delguidice continued to swing a hot bat by extending the lead in the bottom of the third inning when he drove in two runs on a single to left field. He concluded the weekend series with 13 RBI’s and reaching base safely in his last eight plate appearances. The shortstop improved his batting average by .170 points.  He entered Saturday’s game with a .185 batting average but currently stands at a .353 clip.

The Owls would push across three more runs to take a 9-5 lead in the fifth inning. The big hit came from junior right fielder Andy Mee with a triple to deep center field that scored sophomore catcher Mike Albaladejo. Mee would score on a one-out single by junior left fielder Colby Gratton, and Delguidice driving in Gratton with the third run in the inning.

Junior right hander Ryan Garton would slam the door on a Boston College rally as he earned the victory in relief, tossing four scoreless innings. He struck out four batters while scattering four hits. Freshman R.J. Alvarez sealed the win for the Owls by pitching the ninth inning.

FAU would cap the scoring in the bottom of the seventh inning as Scheffler hit his second home run of the contest.  Delguidice drove in his fourth run of the game when he doubled down the left field line scoring Gratton from first base.

Delguidice, Mee, Scheffler, Gratton, junior second baseman Raymond Church all had multi-hit performances.

The Eagles grabbed an early lead in the first inning after back-to-back solo home runs by Matt Hamlet and Mickey Wiswall off starter Kevin Alexander. The freshman right hander allowed three earned runs in four innings.

The Owls return to the field on Wednesday against the University of Pittsburgh. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
