FAU Football Shines on 2018 All C-USA Lists

Devin Singletary, Reggie Bain and Harrison Bryant were voted as First Team All-Conference USA selections, among 10 total nods earned by Florida Atlantic University football players on Tuesday.

BJ Etienne and Chris Robison also worked their way into an experienced 2018 Florida Atlantic University football starting lineup, and both players’ accomplishments were recognized by the Conference USA coaches with a spot on the C-USA All-Freshman team.

Singletary was bestowed First Team honors after leading the league in rushing yards (1,348), rushing yards per game (112.3), scoring per game (11.0) and rushing and total touchdowns (22). In those same categories nationally, he is listed No. 10, No. 11, No. 3, No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Bain, who started every game in his four-year career (2014, 2015, 2017 and 2018) led an offensive line that was ranked No. 14 nationally allowing just 1.17 sacks per game and blocked for a rushing attack that also was No. 14 in rushing yards. In 2018 he held a grade of 90 percent and recorded 31 knockdowns while allowing just two sacks. Tight end Bryant completed the trio of First Team selections, starting each of the team’s 12 games. The Gray, Georgia native ended his junior campaign second on the team with 45 receptions for 662 yards and added four touchdowns. Bryant lead all C-USA tight ends in receiving yards and was listed No. 13 among all league receivers in average yards per game, while placing No. 11 in total yards.

Senior defensive back Jalen Young received Second Team recognition while redshirt junior Kerrith Whyte, Jr. earned honors on two different teams. He was a Second Team All-Conference selection at kick returner and was an Honorable Mention selection at running back.

Young, who was a C-USA postseason honoree in each of his four seasons at FAU, ended his senior campaign second on the team with 59 tackles, and he added 2.5 tackles for a loss, including one sack, and grabbed one interception to conclude his career with 13, tops among all active FBS players. Whyte became the first Owl to record a kick return for a score in 2017 and repeated that feat in 2018. He was ranked No. 6 nationally in kick returns for a TD and No. 3 nationally in kickoff returns yards per attempt (28.7). His running back numbers are just as impressive, earning him an Honorable Mention spot. Whyte tallied 866 rushing yards, recorded 11 touchdowns (8 rushing, 2 receiving and 1 kick return) and led all C-USA players with 1,571 all-purpose yards in 2018.

Joining Whyte as C-USA Honorable Mention selections were teammates Brandon Walton (OL), Jovon Durante (WR), Rashad Smith (LB) and Shelton Lewis (DB), making for 10 nods for nine different Owls.

Etienne started the first 11 contests in 2018, missing only the final start with an illness. He was part of a starting line rotation that ranked No. 14 nationally in sacks allowed with just 1.17 per game, blocked for a ground attack which averaged more than 241 yards per game, and is currently ranked No. 14 nationally in rushing offense. The line’s efforts including protection for a dynamic running back duo of Devin Singletary and Kerrith Whyte, Jr., Singletary tallied 1,358 yards and 22 scores, which rank the Deerfield Beach, Florida native No. 10 nationally in yards per game. Fellow junior running back and Loxahatchee, Florida native Whyte rushed for 866 yards and eight touchdowns, and is ranked No. 77 nationally in rushing yards per game. Etienne was part of a line that saw a total of 15 Owls record a carry including fellow C-USA All-Freshman Robison, who had 73 carries for 211 yards and three touchdowns. That same line protection enabled Robison to develop into an All-Conference freshman under center.

Robison drew his first start at quarterback versus Oklahoma and continued to progress as the season developed. In game two versus Air Force, he set an FAU single-game record for yards (471) and in completion percentage (82.5) going 33-40-0 with three touchdowns. He finished his freshman campaign with 12 games played, including 11 starts, and completed 192 of his 304 pass attempts for 2,540 yards and 12 passing scores. He also rushed for three TDs and was called upon to punt six times, averaging 54.7 yards per punt. His longest was for 63 yards.

The freshman duo were part of the 27-member C-USA All-Freshman team, and were two of the 12 selected on offense. Since the Owls joined C-USA, 12 FAU players have earned All-Freshman honors. Etienne is the second offensive lineman and Robison is the first quarterback.
