MID-WEEK MASH UP 2019: Shula Bowl XVIII - FIU @ FAU

This week features FAU's 18th all time matchup against FIU in the rivalry named the Shula Bowl. The Owls lead the all time series against their south Florida foe 12-5.

Kickoff is set for 6:00 this Saturday at FAU Stadium. This matchup will help set the tone for the rest of the regular season as FAU still has hopes of reaching the CUSA title game.

The Lane Kiffin led squad has become one of the hotter Group of 5 programs, as they have won 6 of the past 7 games. Last season, the Owls defeated FIU 49-14 at Riccardo Silva Stadium in Miami.

“What happened in the past, doesn't have anything to do with this game,” Kiffin told reporters today. Still, since arriving in Boca Raton, Kiffin is undefeated against FIU.

Below is our compilation of notables, and some video, as we reach the mid-point of 2019 Game Week 11.

Mid-Week Mashup

- Harrison Bryant Receives Senior Bowl Invite The FAU community received great news in hearing that senior TE Harrison Bryant (photo) would be headed to the Senior Bowl as he prepares for the 2020 NFL Draft. When asked about his approach for the rest of the season, Bryant said “I`m just focused on where my feet are planted.” The Georgia native is currently ranked 6th in FAU in receptions and reciving yards. Bryant also mentions San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle as a star he models his game after. “I watch a lot of tape of from him, 99% of his tape is teach tape for us.”

- Key Matchup The star of the FIU defense is senior LB Sage Lewis. The Opa Locka native was injured to begin the year, but is back at full strength. The senior mike linebacker has a career high 2 interceptions this season. Lewis was named the preseason CUSA Defensive Player of the year and broke a school record with 132 tackles last season. Keep an eye on how he matches up with FAU`s injury riddled backfield.

- By the Numbers FIU starting quarterback James Morgan has done a great job in limiting turnovers this season. As the full time starter, the senior has only thrown two interceptions. One of the strengths of the FAU defense has been causing turnovers. The Owls turnover explosion has been led by CB`s Meiko Dotson and James Pierre, who have combined for 7 interceptions. Expect FAU to disguise coverage to help keep the veteran quarterback off balance.

- Breakout Candidate Law week, RB Chauncey Mason had a career high 11 carries against WKU. Mason, a local product began his high school career at Park Vista HS before transferring and teaming up at Boynton Beach HS with Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson. Chauncey is the younger brother of former Auburn Heisman Trophy finalist RB Tre Mason. Due to the banged up FAU backfield, one might expect another extended look from the local back.
