MID-WEEK MASH UP: 2019 Bye-Week Two

FAU enters their second bye week of the 2019 season, winners of 7 of the last 8 games.

Last week, FAU defeated FIU by the score of 37 to 7. This victory was led by redshirt freshman RB Malcolm Davidson`s 144 yard, 3 touchdown performance.

The Owls currently sit in first place in Conference USA East. However, Marshall is one game behind, as FAU has one more current conference win.

Marshall owns the tiebreaker as they defeated FAU earlier in the season. The top teams in CUSA West are Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss.

The FAU football program has the momentum to finish the season strong.

The Lane Kiffin led program stream rolled rival FIU for the third year in a row, however the Owls next game will be tested against the UTSA Road Runners (4-5) in the Alamodome after the bye.

Below is our compilation of notables, and some video, as the team prepares for the closing weeks of the season.

Mid-Week Mashup

  • John Raine awarded Extra Year Lane Kiffin surprised the media in revealing the news that TE John Raine (photo) had been awarded an extra year of eligibility for next season. During his freshman year, Raine suffered a broken ankle early in the season. “I love being here, im extremely excited about it.” Raine said in regards to returning to Boca Raton for another season. In 2019, Raine has been one of QB Chris Robison`s favorite red zone targets. The Westminster Christian alum has 5 touchdown receptions. Raine and Senior Bowl bound Harrison Bryant make up one of the best tight end duos in the country.

  • Pro Mindset A phrase commonly heard around the FAU Football facility and on social media. This phrase is mostly heard amongst the running backs. “What it look like is Motor Singletary, Kerrith Whyte Jr, Buddy Howell, that's who paved the way, Coach (Keven) Smith starting it. Always having a mindset to work on your craft.” said RB James Charles about the motto. When asked about the benefits of playing under UCF`s leading rusher in school history and former Consensus All American in RB Coach Kevin Smith, Charles said, “The small details, that's what makes great players great”. In his three years in Boca Raton, Kevin Smith has put three running backs on NFL rosters. The list includes Devin Singletary (Bills), Buddy Howell (Houston Texans) and Kerrith Whyte Jr. (Chicago Bears)

  • Lane Addresses Coaching Carousel For the first time publicly, Lane Kiffin responded to the outside noise that always comes around this time of year due to the coaching carousel. “I don`t talk to them about it, it's just part of the business. They're probably used to it because it happens this time of year. It's normal to happen.” Kiffin makes it clear the outside coaching noise is not a distraction.

  • Bowl Outlook Conference USA currently has 5 bowl “tie ins.” Most projections have the Owls attending either that First Responders Bowl, the Gasparilla Bowl or potentially the Bahamas Bowl. However due to the potential shortage of bowl eligible at-large Power 5 teams, FAU could be an attractive team to play in a bigger bowl.
