MID-WEEK MASH UP: MTSU vs FAU

The Owls will play their first conference home game of the season this Saturday at FAU Stadium against Middle Tennessee.

Kickoff is set for 4:00 PM. This will be another test for the surging Owls, while hosting the reigning C-USA East champions.

The team entered the bye week on a three game win streak and hope to keep the momentum going as the Owls next 5 games are against C-USA East opponents.

Last season, the Owls were defeated by Middle Tennessee, 25-21 after the Blue Raiders scored 15 unanswered points to finish the game.

“It`s tough to still watch, it’s a big week for us”, Lane Kiffin said when asking about the unfinished business against MTSU.

Below is our compilation of notables, and some video, as we reach the mid-point of 2019 Game Week 7.

Mid-Week Mashup

  • The Stockstill Bowl Lane Kiffin has never shied away from adding legacies to his program. In late July, former Middle Tennessee QB Brent Stockstill joined the offensive staff as an assist. Brent is the son of long time Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Stockstill and the all-time leader in passing yards and passing touchdowns in Middle Tennessee history.

  • Key Matchup Middle Tennessee S Jovante Moffatt has been one of the best defense players in the nation the past two weeks. Moffatt was named C-USA Defensive player last week after a 14 tackle, 2 interception performance in a home victory against Marshall. Keep a close eye on Moffatt defending the Owls run game. Moffatt is a very instinctive player who can play in the box and has great closing speed against the run. “They have a lot of play makers and they do a lot of unique stuff,” QB Chris Robison said when asked about his impressions of the Middle Tennessee offense.

  • By the Numbers One of the keys to the Owls three game win streak has been red zone efficiency. Currently, FAU ranks 16th in the country in red zone scoring percentage with 94%. The offense finished last season ranked 75th in FBS in red zone scoring percent. Senior TE John Raine (photo above) has emerged as one of QB Chris Robison`s favorite targets down by the endzone. Raine ranks 2nd in C-USA with four touchdowns.

  • Breakout Candidate Rising sophomore Ahman Ross has slowly worked his way up the depth chart since arriving on campus as part of Lane Kiffin`s inaugural 2017 recruiting class. The Jacksonville native is now listed as a starter on FAU`s “two deep” and his versatility will be key in limiting the Middle Tennessee offense which is powered by dual threat QB Asher O`Hara.

  • Injury Report Lane Kiffin told the media that junior cornerback James Pierre will return to action against Middle Tennessee State. While filling in, CB Meiko Dotson had two interceptions in a win against Charlotte.
