BREAKING: FAU To Debut Red Throwback Unifroms, Akileis Leroy Wearing No. 2

Post

Ahead of a photoshoot this morning, FAU Owl's Nest has learned that Akileis Leroy will be donning the number two heading into the 2021 season. During a press conference to open the season, Willie Taggart said that numbers in the single digits would be reserved for players who deserve it, which means Leroy is one of them.

Also noted in the photo above is that FAU will be wearing red throwback uniforms this season. Similar to the uniforms they debuted last season, they pay homage to FAU's first uniforms with blue stripes on the shoulders and "FAU" written on the collar. It seems to look like FAU football is buying into the throwback uniforms and we will see them more this season with the passing of legendary head coach Howard Schnellenberger.

Here are the complete single-digit numbers:

0   DL   Jaylen Joyner
1   LB   Antarrius Moultrie
2   LB   Akileis Leroy
3   RB   Larry McCammon III
3   LB   Eddie Williams
4   S   Teja Young
5   RB   Johnny Ford
5   LB   Ahman Ross
6   QB   Nick Tronti
7   LB   Chase Lasater

If Tronti is No. 6, maybe he’s the starting QB…and another running back in No. 5 is going to look very, very strange.

Red font: I guess 6 linebackers will be starting too.

On a more serious note, I don’t th8nk this means he’s starting. But it does scare me.

The bigger takeaway is guys not wanting single digits. Single digits are sweeeeet. Except for No. 00.

I must be getting old because I always thought throwback meant something like 50 years back. Those uniforms are fresh in my memory. On a related note, first day of classes for the semester and I made an unintended reference to my getting old and students staying the same age (Matthew McConaughey "Dazed and Confused" style) although totally not referencing the line or his intended meaning. Yes, I am officially now old.

GO OWLS!!!

Scared? About what NJOWL? Tronti is more than capable as QB1. 3 and 1 as a starter last year before Willie pulled him for some WT Jr. reps and the Posey experiment. How did that work out for everyone? Did nothing but probably ruin any self-swagger the kid had going on. No need to take cover. All will be fine!

To be fair half of the fans wanted  him pulled. They don't win that game without Posey. I get that he knows the offense but you cannot just be able to attack a small percentage of the field. He is great checking down but what happens to when the defense loads the box.

Agreed. I am not not trying to be a Twitter QB expert or MMQB when I say this about Tronti, but:

* I feel Tronti is a very physical quarterback who can beat teams with check downs and short passes. He’s never going to be the most accurate man in the room (which we knew coming in based off 2019 camp + brief attempts in 2019) which is fine in CUSA. However…

* I felt as early as the UNCC game on that either Taggart/Mehringer didn’t know how best to use Tronti, or they were forcing him to be something he wasn’t. He’s not a guy who’s going to hit on a lot of 10-15-yard passes on 1st and 10 or 2nd and 8. You can beat teams in CUSA with slants and out routes. In hindsight it felt like they stuck to an offense initially designed for Robison when Tronti isn’t Robison.

* The lack of impactful TEs did him zero favor and I don’t think the WRs were that good in 2020. It’s easy for people to boost Wester’s impact and make him out to be the next star receiver when pretty much all he did was run jet sweeps. Show me something as a pass-catcher. They got nothing from Aaron Young before he opted out. Willie Wright vanished after the first two drives in games. Merrell was in and out of the lineup.

* Tronti did not have a good year in 2020. I think he absolutely has the opportunity to have a bounceback  year this year. Zaire Mitchell can help. Maybe TJ Chase becomes a 45/600/6 guy which would be terrific. I’m good with Tronti Time!

OK, long rant over. Almost 10 days to go!
