Mid season Grades

Post

We are at the half way point of this season and it’s time to grades at this point and get your reaction to them and post your own grades.

Coaching Staff:B
Last year with COVID and no spring practice and the protocols and missed time the staff did a ok job just getting us to finish the season .500. Yet with a full off season to work with I was hoping to see some improvement in areas. Granted with Posey joining the team helped improve our QB play that hasn’t translated to road victories where we need to win to win conference. Also too many big plays and blown assignments have hurt the defense and the team getting off to slow starts offensively also hasn’t help. Look to see the team reset this week before beginning prep for Charlotte.

Offensive: B
Again last year as a anomaly didn’t help this team last season but with a full offseason you figure there would be cohesion even with the late addition to Perry on the roster. Yet it’s a tale of two teams away from FAU stadium and it’s showing. Slow starts, and lack of playing well on the road hurts the grade. The talent is there but the question is can they put it together this week before Charlotte prep to change the course for a Championship run.

Defense: B
Not going to mention last year again so I’ll get right to it. This unit has been on the field slot this season with the offenses slow starts and not playing well on the road but at times they have played well. Yet too many big plays and missed assignments hurts thr grade right now but Mike Stoops is teaching them to be aggressive and it’s showing. Hopefully a small reset comes this week to tighten up those mistakes and make a championship run.

Special teams B+
The one unit that I do not have the greatest concerns about this season as of right now. Matt Hayball is the all start with his ability to flip the field and kick offs are keeping teams from returns but there still has been big returns against this unit. Our place kicker is young and hopefully will continue to improve but time will tell. Look for some improvement coming off the bye week.

Overall: B
The team is where many of us expected to be this season even after that ugly loss coming off a good UAB team yet this team needs some reset. I expect Coach Taggart and the staff to do exactly this week before preparing for Charlotte.

So let me know and the season restarts next Thursday and we are 0-0. Go Owls.

I wish you had graded my papers in college.

We have beaten the bottom 10 teams and FCS school on the schedule.  Haven't competed in the other 3 games.  Big difference between losing a contested game and not competing.

We have had drastic ups and downs so far this season.  Special Teams is the only group grading above a C+.

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.

Good points here and I agree with most.
I know there was talk about returning 10 of 11 players on defense and a number of players on offense that was going to make us great this year.
Unfortunately most of the other teams we play have the same thing happening for them with the extra year of eligibility due to COVID.
We struggled against them last year and may find it difficult to win against this year.
