OwlBytes: 2021 FAU Fall Camp August 19th - Running Backs & Notes

Now that Day 11 of camp is in the rearview mirror, FAU football continues to gear its players up for the 2021 season. The running back position is one of the readiest positions on the team, as the Owls will have a plethora of talented tailbacks with a variety of skillsets.

"All of them have different styles," running backs coach Chris Perkins said. "We have shifty guys, we got quick guys, so all of those guys have a different type of style. All of those guys are different when it runs down, but they're effective at what they're doing."

The Owls will be led by 5'10, 222 lb junior running back Malcolm Davidson, 5'11, 204 lb sophomore Larry McCammon III, and 5'10, 200 lb redshirt senior James Charles. Young guys like the 5'5 175 lb redshirt sophomore Johnny Ford, 6'0 199 redshirt freshman Kelvin Dean Jr., 5'10, 196 lb freshman Zuberi Mobley and 5'6, 145 lb redshirt freshman Rayquan Berry also add more depth to the running back group.

With that in mind, here is the eighth rendition of the parliament Position Previews, looking over the running backs, and nuggets from today's interviews and practice.

Pounding The Rock

  • Expected to Lead Malcolm Davidson: Davidson is likely to step into a role as a leader in his junior season after putting up 298 yards and two rushing touchdowns last season. He is also very useful in the receiving game as well, as he added six receptions for 96 yards and two receiving touchdowns. Davidson is a dynamic tailback who is very quick and also is able to break tackles with runs up the middle at 5'10, 222 lbs. He has consistently been one of the best performers at camp this season, showing off great power and elusiveness. He may be due for a breakout season.

  • Keep An Eye On Kelvin Dean Jr.: The redshirt freshman has shown significant improvement during camp after he had 44 yards on 19 attempts last season. Standing at 6'0, 199 lbs, Dean is a very fast runner who can break tackles and can find holes in the defense. With B.J. Emmons now in the NFL, there are even more opportunities for him to see the field, and he will be one of the players who could emerge as the future of FAU's backfield.

  • Johnny Ford: The running back position is so deep, that there are two players to watch, and for good reason. Ford has been making strides during camp, showing blistering speed and elusiveness at 5'5, 175 lbs. The sophomore transferred from USF after putting up 285 yards and three touchdowns on 55 carries last season. His true freshman season in 2018 was absolutely dominant, as he racked up 787 rushing yards on 115 carries with eight rushing touchdowns. Ford has been showing flashes of that freshman season during camp, turning heads with his agility and acceleration during drills. He may emerge as one of the leaders in the running back room this season.

  • Dark Horse Candidate Rayquan Berry: The 5'6, the 145-pound redshirt freshman has been turning heads throughout camp, showing elite foot speed and agility during the first two weeks of camp. James Charles mentioned during his media availability yesterday that Berry "soaked up the playbook," understanding the offense inside and out, knowing how to utilize that elite food speed and agility that he has. While the running back room is very deep, Berry has been one of the most improved players during this camp and has the potential to see some playing time this season.

OwlBytes for August 19th

  • Chase Lasater Thriving at Outside Linebacker This summer, Chase Lasater made the move from inside linebacker to outside linebacker, and so far during camp, he has emerged as a natural talent at the position. "The thing you get with Chase is a high-energy, physically tough guy," inside linebackers coach Lance Thomspon said during yesterday's interview. You put him at the outside linebacker position and he is really dominant there and really disruptive." During practice today, Lasater was working on drills where he was breaking off blocks off the edge, and what Thompson said holds true, he has the strength and block shedding ability to be effective at the outside linebacker position.

  • Devin Hayes Emerges as Right Tackle Favorite The redshirt sophomore has been one of the most impressive offensive linemen during camp, and he is emerging as a favorite to start at the right tackle spot. After moving from left tackle during the offseason, Hayes has taken all of the necessary steps he needs to get better. He has shown elite strength in both the run block and pass block game during camp and may be a crucial part of the team next season.

  • Jefftey Joseph Continues To Impress Redshirt junior Jefftey Joseph has been one of the most impressive wide receivers this week. He has been running his routes very cleanly, with a lot of speed, and has been making beautiful catches. He seems to have gelled with all of the quarterbacks, as they continue to battle it out for the starting job. Joseph could be another useful receiver in a wideout room that is already very deep.
