Recruiting Quote - University of Michigan

The head recruitor from Michigan just recently stated this in an interview…

"Sometimes forgotten in the recruiting game can be the character and attitude of these high school kids turned stars. But for Michigan the entire recruiting process begins with how these athletes conduct themselves.

“The top of our list before we recruit anybody is character,” said Borges. “If they pass the character test then we can start talking about if they can play for us but if they don’t pass that test we’re going to the next guy.”

I really hope we have the same philosophy while recruiting.

Love high character hard working kids. Much easier to cheer for. When times get tough that is usually when character is revealed.

From what I've heard of Coach Pelini he is looking exactly for that. He wants kids that are going to be leaders. They will do community service. They are actively making sure they go to class.

Whole new world folks.

I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick @$$ and I'm out of bubble gum.

I'm sure coach P. has the same philosophy however one might have to bend the rules a little when recruiting for a 1-11 Sunbelt team.

Because only low-character kids are capable of coming in and making an immediate impact?

No, not at all. We all know this team has lacked discipline for sometime now and I believe our new coaching staff will make changing that a priority. However, we might have to take a chance on a recruit or two such as we did with Cre'von. His character was in question and we gave him an opportunity to be a asset to the program.

I kinda see what your saying, but even "god's gift" to football all mighty Michigan has kicked players off their team for off the field issues at various points in their programs history.  Just like Penn State was cleanest big name program in the country right?

Ugh…who said anything about gods gift?  I just think a lot of people think you have to recruit thugs and cheat to win…you dont.  Penn State is an entirely different animal, that had nothing to do with recruiting low character players.

Kids will make mistakes I understand that…I just think recruiting talent AND character is important.

I agree. Talent and class make for the best programs. Meanwhile, the tragedy at Penn State wasn't a recruits' problem – it was a coach's problem. As far as I know, the players were not involved.

Heard him talk about that at the dinner, very happy about that.
