Three Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer players have been named to the 2014 Preseason All-Conference USA Teams by College Sports Madness.

Senior Olivia MBala was selected to be the C-USA Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and also was named a first team defender. Claire Emslie, FAU’s leading active scorer, and Katie Englert, a member of the 2013 All-Freshman Team, received honors as well.

MBala, a native of Ontario, Canada, has racked up nearly 3,000 minutes on the pitch in her two seasons at FAU. As a senior, MBala will be key to Baker's back line, a defensive unit which allowed only seven goals in C-USA play in 2013. For her efforts, MBala was named All-Conference First Team following her junior campaign.
Emslie was chosen as a First Team midfielder as a terrific scoring threat. She has tallied 17 goals and 37 points in her 35 outings as an Owl. The Scotland native was named to the C-USA All-Conference Second Team following FAU's debut season in the league a year ago.

Englert, a Clearwater native, started 13 of the 17 matches in which she played in 2013 and took seven shots on the year, placing two of those on goal. Her 876 minutes was the second-most among freshmen on the FAU squad.

The Owls tied against Stetson on Sunday afternoon in their home opener at FAU Soccer Stadium…game release via SID Brandon Goodwin…

In its first home match of 2014, the Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer team fought to a double-overtime tie with Stetson on Sunday afternoon.

The Owls (1-0-1) struck early when senior Yazmin Ongtengco drove in her first career goal off of a corner kick from Claire Emslie, giving FAU a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute.

FAU outshot Stetson (0-1-1) 8-4 in the first half, with each team recording one save.

A penalty kick early in the second half set FAU up for an insurance goal. Newcomer Taylor Townsend drilled the shot into the right side of the net in the 53rd minute, earning her first goal as an Owl.

Just five minutes later, Stetson got on the board. A corner kick from Eduarda Pavao was deflected by FAU keeper Sydney Drinkwater, but Allison Zaccheo was there for the rebound, cutting the lead to 2-1.

The Hatters tied the game four minutes after that as Pavao earned a goal of her own on an unassisted breakaway.

FAU takes to the road for a trip to California to play Pepperdine on Aug. 29 and Cal Poly on Aug. 31. The Owls’ next home game is slated for Sept. 14 against Brown.

The women's soccer team also lost to UCF 1-0 on Friday night…game release via SID Brandon Goodwin:

Florida Atlantic University goalkeeper Sydney Drinkwater made five saves during regulation to keep UCF at bay, but the Knights came back in overtime to score a sudden-death goal, taking a 1-0 victory on Friday.

The match, which lasted until after midnight, was delayed due to inclement weather that pushed back the start of the men’s game in the first part of the doubleheader in Orlando.

Claire Emslie posted a pair of shots, joined by shots by newcomers Jade Rhodes and Hildur Hauksdottir, but the Owls (2-2-1) were outshot 17-4 in the nonconference battle.

UCF’s Alex Piercy scored the game-winner, her first goal of the season, in the 105th minute with assists by Hannah Debose and Jennifer Martin to hand the Knights their third win of the year.

The Owls will travel to Coral Gables on Sunday to face the University of Miami in a 2 p.m. match. Admission is free to all fans.
