UAB begins preparations for Florida Atlantic

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Coming off a 38-33 win this past Saturday at UTEP, the UAB football team is beginning preparations for its final non-conference game of the season.

UAB (3-5) will host Florida Atlantic (2-5) on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT in the Blazers’ homecoming game at Legion Field.

“They’re a different style of offense (than we faced last week), but they’re still a very good offensive football team,” Callaway said. “They do a nice job throwing the football.”

Game Day Thread: FAU vs UAB - Nov. 7th 2:00PM EST

We aren't the only ones hurting right now…….

UAB analysis: Big plays need to be spread throughout the lineup

"Health is a huge concern for UAB, particularly on defense, as the Blazers enter the four-week stretch that will ultimately define their season. The list of missing defenders coming into Saturday’s game included safety Chase Daniel, linebacker Keon Harris and cornerback Cornelius Richards.

The list of injured grew longer during the win over UTEP. Safety Elliott McGaskin had two tackles, shared a sack and an interception with a 44-yard return before leaving for good after hurting his neck on the final play of the first half. Defensive end Bryant Turner hurt a hamstring in the second half and cornerback Terrell Springs hurt his right shoulder on the final series of the game. Somehow the Blazers need to find a way to find enough players on defense the remainder of the season."

UAB Notes: Blazers prepare for FAU backup QB

"UAB head coach Neil Callaway said he knows what to expect from Florida Atlantic’s offense on Saturday even though the Owls are expected to be without starting quarterback Rusty Smith.

'I don’t think they’ll change anything they do,' Callaway said.

'The other guy (Van Camp) came in at the end of the game and they look a lot alike,' Callaway said. 'The experience factor with the Smith kid is obvious but the other kid is tall (and) throws the ball good.'"

Sports Network Preview:

"The UAB Blazers will step out of Conference-USA action when they take on the Sun Belt Conference's Florida Atlantic Owls this Saturday at Legion Field.

The Owls head into this matchup fresh off a 27-20 loss to Middle Tennessee. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for Florida Atlantic and left the team with a mere 2-2 mark in Sun Belt action. Surprisingly both of FAU's victories this season have come on the road, but since the beginning of last year the team is just 4-7 as the visitor.

As for the Blazers, they snapped a two-game losing skid with a 38-33 victory over UTEP this past weekend. It was third win on the year for UAB, and also pushed the team's C-USA mark to 3-2 on the year. The past two years the Blazers have finished below .500 at home, but at this point in 2009 the team is 2-1 at Legion Field.

This will be just the second-ever meeting between the two schools on the gridiron. Last year was the first matchup between FAU and UAB, and although it was a close matchup, the Owls pulled away with a 49-34 victory."

I had a great time visiting Ft. Lauderdale / Hollywood for a short weekend getaway last week.  I can't wait until you guys get your on-campus stadium.  Sorry to hear about Rusty Smith, he was such a warrior.  I still think you guys will beat UAB this weekend and are the only team in the Sun Belt that can give Troy a run for their money.  Good luck!

Florida Atlantic's balance on offense has UAB's Neil Callaway concerned

Defending the pass is not the only thing the concerns UAB head coach Neil Callaway with Florida Atlantic coming to Legion Field on Saturday.

“They are a real balanced football team,” Callaway said. “They do a good job running the football, they really do.”

FAU has used the balance to break the top 10 nationally in total offense. The Owls are ninth in total offense (452.5 yards per game), 11th in passing offense (301.7 ypg) and 53rd in rushing offense (150.8 ypg).
