Sun Belt Football: Games for Week of November 17, 2012

Post

The Sun Belt will be bustling in Week Twelve, as there are no out of conference match-ups and the teams will all go head-to-head.

Mid week munchies are absent for the period, and will have to wait until Friday night when the Owls host soon to be ex-member FIU at FAU Stadium.

There's a lot at stake considering the Shula Bowl Trophy currently resides in Miami, and will rest in the victor's abode afterwards for a "to be determined" period of time since the squads are not scheduled to face off again in the near future.

On Saturday, the Blue Raiders face off against the Jaguars, and the Red Wolves travel to Troy in the lead-off spots.

Shortly thereafter, the Mean Green take on the Warhawks in Monroe before the Hilltoppers close out the day's action with a tilt against the Ragin' Cajuns in Lafayette.

Here's the full slate:

November 16th

Florida International 34  Florida Atlantic 24

November 17th

Middle Tennessee 20  South Alabama 12

Arkansas State 41  Troy 34

North Texas 16  Louisiana-Monroe 42

Western Kentucky 27  Louisiana-Lafayette 31

Enjoy the games!

FINAL:

FIU 34  FAU 24

The Panthers (3-8, 2-5) survive 403 yards of Owls' passing yards thanks to a stingy run defense that allowed a net performance of -12 yards.

WR Jenson Stoshak (108 yards, 5 rec) had a breakout game for Florida Atlantic (3-8, 2-5), whose special teams were not so special when allowing a return of 100 yards that saw the game extend beyond their reach.

FINAL:

MTSU 20  USA 12

South Alabama (2-9, 1-6) coughed it up four times (3 INT), and that cost them dearly, as the Blue Raiders (7-3, 5-1) stay alive in the conference title hunt.

Jordan Parker ran for 162 yards for MTSU, and Logan Kilgore was 16-of-29 for 233 yards and 2TD.

FINAL:

Arkansas State 41  Troy 34

The Red Wolves (8-3, 6-1) play spoiler on homecoming day in a high scoring affair featuring over 1,100 yards of offense between the teams.

Troy (5-6, 3-4) will have one more shot at becoming bowl eligible, but they needed this win to have a chance at post season for all intents and purposes.

Trojan QB Corey Robinson has found his rhythm again, and threw for 417 yards despite the loss.

FINAL:

North Texas 16  Louisiana-Monroe 42

Can you tell that Kolton Browning is back?

The Mean Green (4-7, 3-4) could as the skilled signal caller was 25-of-34 for 324 yards and 3 scores in UNT's trip to Monroe.

How North texas managed just 16 points off 467 yards is a bit perplexing though.

This is not a Belt game note here but does it piss anyone else off when you see nearly 30 Florida players on the WV or Marshall or WKU rosters? And I mean nearly 30 on EACH!  Think how good FAU could be if we kept only 1/10th of those players home!

Re: Sun Belt Football: Games for Week of November 17, 2012

FINAL:

Western Kentucky 27  Louisiana-Lafayette 31

Despite Antonio Andrews 238 yard (2TD) performance in the ground game, the Toppers (6-5, 3-4) just took a big hit in possible bowl participation.

Losers of three straight Sun Belt contests, they really needed to get this one to set themselves aside, as a win over North Texas is not likely to land them into committee favor now - even at a final mark of 7-5.

ULL (6-4, 4-2) has a somewhat easy road to hoe with USA and the Owls still remaining, but the latter may not be a given.

Pending MTSU's reamining results against Troy and ASU, their hopes may lie in the balance of December 1st's tilt at Florida Atlantic.

QB Terrance Broadway had quite a showing on Saturday though, throwing for 258 yards (1TD), and rushing for 145 more (1TD).

Its not Browning, its the head coach…he just remembered how to coach this week  ;).

That is a ton of yards for that point total…red zone turnovers?

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.

Nope, 2INT's but neither were in the zone…one was on the first play of a drive.

Sun Belt Football: Games for Week of November 17, 2012

Players of the Week for Week Twelve, as voted on by the Sun Belt media panel:

Offensive

Ryan Aplin (Arkansas State, Sr., QB)

Senior quarterback Ryan Aplin recorded a school-record 454 yards of total offense, including a season-high 369 passing yards with a career-high four touchdowns, and broke the Sun Belt Conference record for career passing yards in Arkansas State’s 41-34 road victory against Troy. Aplin completed 28-of-42 passing attempts and increased his passing touchdowns’ total to 20, the second most in ASU history. His four passing touchdowns also tied the second most in school history and matched the most by a Sun Belt Conference player this year. He rushed for a season-high 85 yards as well with a 7.1 average per attempt. Aplin became the second player in Sun Belt Conference history to throw for over 10,000 yards, increasing his career total to 10,307 to move him past FAU’s Rusty Smith (10,112 yards from 2006-09) for the league record.

Defensive

Jajuan Harley (Middle Tennessee, r-Jr., DB)

Safety Jajuan Harley was responsible for forcing three South Alabama turnovers in Middle Tennessee’s 20-12 victory over the Jaguars. Harley also managed five tackles in the Blue Raiders victory. The Tallahassee product recorded his first interception in the first quarter, stopping a USA scoring drive. He then forced a fumble and recovered his own force to help thwart the South Alabama offense. Finally, Harley intercepted a pass in the dwindling minutes of the fourth quarter to seal the Blue Raiders fifth win on the road. Harley has 63 tackles and a team-best three interceptions in 10 games this season.

Special Teams

Richard Leonard (FIU, So., RS)

Leonard was lightning all night for the Panthers and was a driving force in FIU's 34-24 Sun Belt Conference road victory at Florida Atlantic. FIU had not trailed in the game until mid-way through the third quarter when FAU went ahead 17-14. The lead would be split-second brief, because on the ensuing kickoff Richard broke through the first line of Owls, found a seem through the right side of the coverage and raced a school-record 100 yards for the touchdown. Although the game had its thrilling moments the rest of the way, FIU never trailed again. On the night, Leonard had a career-high night returning the ball, totaling five returns (4 kick, 1 punt) for 181 yards. The highlight kick return was the longest by any Sun Belt Conference player in 2012, and his two returns for touchdowns this season (PR vs. Akron) places him as the only league player with two return TD's in 2012.
