FAU Recruiting Notebook 7/11: Camp Recap

While foul weather delayed the start of FAU’s fourth football camp, it didn’t keep scare away some highly regarded recruits from around the state.

With the Owls having landed a pair of commitments in the past week, the momentum on the recruiting trail is heavy – and that carried into Tuesday.

FAU hosted some of their top prospects at key positions and were able to evaluate some other local recruits. The talent was so good that head coach Carl Pelini even made a brief appearance out on the practice fields.

Below are the players who were pulled aside by the coaches, or are currently being heavily recruited by the Owls.

Cortavious Givens RB Admiral Farragut Academy – Givens (pictured above) is a powerful running back who holds offers from Virginia and FAU. At first glance, it doesn't look like he would fit in a spread offense, but his feet are surprisingly quick. Givens traveled across the state to workout in front of the coaches and was attached to running backs coach Kerry Dixon all day. Givens said after the camp that he was surprised by the facilities and that the Owls are “right at the top.”

Kendrick Edwards WR Norland – Edwards is a lanky six-foot-six wide receiver that holds offers from Miami, Florida State, Louisville, Arkansas, Kentucky and South Carolina. The Owls were fortunate to get Edwards on campus and actually working out. FAU appears to be a long-shot, but Edwards toured the dorms after the camp with recruiting coordinator Jeff Sims.

Trey Rodriguez ATH Mainland – Like with Edwards, FAU was very grateful to get Rodriguez on campus. The athlete holds over 20 offers, including bids from West Virginia, Wisconsin and Georgia Tech. Rodriguez was the unofficial “MVP” of the day as he burned by defenders in drills all morning. Rodriguez said afterwards that he camped with the Owls because his dad lived close by and he liked coach Dixon.

Alin Edouard QB Hialeah – Edouard is currently committed to Miami and didn’t workout on Tuesday. However, that didn’t stop offensive coordinator Brian Wright and new graduate assistant Graham Wilbert from getting in his ear. The two chatted with Edouard before and after the camp and appeared to be trying to make their presence felt. Edouard is regarded as a “soft” commit to Miami.

A’lique Terry OL Hialeah – With 14 offers in hand, Terry decided to camp at FAU after being offered by the Owls two weeks ago. Projected as a center, Terry worked with offensive line coach Luke Meadows all morning on his technique. FAU has now hosted Terry twice on campus and could be making a move on the local lineman.

Jewison Dawkins WR Plantation – Dawkins arrived at FAU with just two offers, and left with a third after putting together a noteworthy performance. The Owl’s decided to offer Dawkins at the conclusion of camp following a 7-on-7 session in which he dominated. UMass and Bowling Green have also offered the six-foot-two wide receiver.

Alex McGough QB Gaither – There wasn’t a whole lot of quarterbacks working out on Tuesday, but McGough was the cream of the crop. He displayed a strong arm all morning, and constantly found receivers down the field. FIU offered the signal caller last week, and FAU could soon follow in suit.

Joshua Addison OL Miami Central – Addison is a big boy at six-foot-four 281-pounds, and is claiming an offer from Western Kentucky. He faired well in the offensive lineman drills, but struggles with his balance at times. He’s a player who will need some time to develop.

Hunter Snyder DE East Lake –Snyder was the surprise of the day, virtually bursting onto the scene out of no where. The six-foot-four defensive end ran a 4.6 timed 40-yard dash, which was the talk of all the coaches. He’s an individual to keep your eye on.

Givens appears to be a solid back.

On a side note, looks a little like former Owl Xavier Stinson.

Did we even do these camps under Schnelly? Maybe one?

We're getting one guys on campus, that's step one, the momentum s building.

I believe we always did these camps.  Alfred was discovered at a camp at FAU.

There were some camps, but nothing really like this. FAU is doing a very nice job of getting talent on campus – and it's working out. I think it was difficult for the old staff to host events like this, because they didn't have an on-campus stadium to show off. For the later part of these camp sessions, the prospects tour the stadium and facilities. The offensive and defensive lineman even do one-on-one's inside the stadium.

Very cool, thanks. We certainly have never had the caliber of player touring campus like we have this summer. We'll land one of em one day soon

We landed the #2 rusher in the NFL at one of our camps.  That may be tough to top  ;)
