FAU’s Road to Signing Day 2014: Linebacker

LB Matt Solt is being courted by FAU.

Linebacker

The Skinny: Linebacker is the position of need on defense for FAU, and it's because of a simple reason. The Owl's return just one linebacker next season who has started a game, and that's senior Andre Kirk. Outside of him, the unit has combined to make a mere 35 tackles. Defensive coordinator Jovan Dewitt got good news when three-star linebacker Kris Harris committed to the class, but FAU will need to add at least two more linebackers in the next few weeks. Expect some more names to appear in the coming days but there already is a strong group of targets.

Committed:

Kris Harris - Godby (Tallahassee, Fla.) - Harris became the first verbal commitment of the Charlie Partridge era, when he pledged his services to the Owls in late December. The three-star linebacker chose FAU over 20 other offers, and should be a gem of the class. The one knack on him is his height at 6-foot-1, but he makes up for it with his lateral movement.

Targets:

Matt Solt - Gainesville (Gainesville, Fla.) - The teammates of current FAU commit Byres Hickman, Solt (pictured) is a run-stopping linebacker that can plug the middle of the defense. He already took an official visit to Iowa State, and is visiting FAU the weekend of January 17th. His recruitment hasn't made much news until recently, which means FAU could be in good shape to land a commitment.

D'Ronzjiah Mathews - South Fort Myers (Fort Myers, Fla.) - Like Solt, Mathews is the teammate of a current FAU commit. On Thursday, Dewitt met with offensive lineman Joe Gold and also spent time with Mathews. The three-star linebacker is one of FAU's top targets, and a visit is expected. He holds offers from Miami, Arizona, North Carolina and USF.

Tevin Evans - Booker T. Washington (Miami, Fla.) - Evans was offered by the Owls previous coaching staff, but was visited by Partridge in person on Thursday. Booker T. traditionally is the home to a host of FBS prospects, and Evans is just the next one in line. The two-star projects as an outside linebacker. He's in the works of setting up a visit.

Alon Sims - Royal Palm Beach (West Palm Beach, Fla.) - Sims is currently committed to Western Michigan, but has been hearing from Dewitt since last summer. He played multiple positions in high school, but his ranging frame and hips are what project him best at outside linebacker. Sims will visit Kalamazoo on January 24th, but could take a trip to FAU before it's all said and done.

Others to Watch:

Willie Harvey (St. Augustine, Fla.); Ezekiel Edmonds (West Palm Beach, Fla.); Kaywon Davis (Hollywood, Fla.); Sean Bowens (Port St. Lucie, Fla.); Nick McBeath (Miami, Fla.).
