The Owls saw their third draw of the season on Sunday against the Blazers in tough fashion…match release via SID Brandon Goodwin:

The goalposts proved to be the enemy for the Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer team on Sunday as three potential game-winning goals glanced off the uprights. The Owls (6-6-3) tied 0-0 at Conference USA foe UAB.

FAU goalkeeper Sydney Drinkwater earned her seventh shutout of her debut season with five saves in the match.
The Owls refused to be outshot for the ninth consecutive match, placing eight of their 15 shots on goal. Over the last nine matches, FAU has taken 156 shots compared to just 84 by their opponents.

Claire Emslie and Hildur Hauksdottir led the way with three shots apiece, while Taylor Townsend, Olivia MBala and Asta Arnadottir each took multiple shots.

Dani Dangremond had a chance at a spectacular goal in the final seconds of regulation, but it ricocheted off the post to send the game to overtime. Emslie took two shots in the first overtime while the FAU defense did not give UAB any opportunities.

With 24 seconds remaining in the second overtime, MBala had a good look at a winning goal, but hers also met the left post, bouncing back into play and keeping the match at a draw.

The Owls return home to host two of the top squads in C-USA as North Texas comes to Boca Raton for a 6 p.m. match on Friday, Oct. 17.

Shortly afterwards, forward Kayla Faulkner connected for another Owls score in the 34th minute. It was the sophomore's first collegiate goal, which came via header and Claire Emslie (four shots) providing the assist.

UNT outpaced the Owls in overall shots 16-8, but FAU was more proficient with an 7-5 advantage on target.

Goalkeeper Sydney Drinkwater saw her 8th shutout of the year in the win, and registered five saves on the night.

Tough senior day, as the Owls drop a close one to Rice…match release via SID Brandon Goodwin:

The Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer team took eleven second-half shots, but it wasn’t enough to overcome an early Rice lead as the visiting Owls won 3-2.

Three FAU seniors – Olivia MBala, Amanda Odato and Yazmin Ongtengco – took the pitch for the final time at the FAU Soccer Stadium.

Rice (8-3-3, 4-2-1 C-USA) struck swiftly in the opening minutes as Lauren Hughes and Samantha Chaiken scored in the fifth and eighth minutes, respectively to put FAU at a 2-0 disadvantage.

In the 15th minute, FAU goalkeeper Sydney Drinkwater made a save, but the rebound was deflected into the goal by Rice’s Danielle Spriggs to increase the lead to 3-0.

FAU (7-7-3, 2-3-2 C-USA) got on the board in the 33rd minute when Claire Emslie drilled a penalty kick to cut the lead to two. With the goal, the junior moved into sole position of ninth place in career goals in FAU history with her 21st.

That score held until the 59th minute when Drinkwater’s punt down the middle of the field was taken by MBala, who split two defenders for her third goal of the year to make it a one-point game.

FAU took nine shots over the final twenty minutes and five in the last eleven minutes, but was unable to find the back of the net. FAU outshot Rice 17-9 on the day while Drinkwater made four saves.

FAU ends its season with three road matches, starting with a trip to UTEP and UTSA next weekend. The regular season wraps up with a battle at Louisiana Tech on Oct. 30.

UTEP scored two first half goals within an eight minute span to defeat Florida Atlantic 2-1 on Friday night in El Paso.

The Owls (7-8-3, 2-4-2) enjoyed an advantage in overall attempts at 16-11 for the tilt, with 12 of them occurring in the second half, but the Miners  (11-5-2, 5-2-1) edged those on target 6-5.

Claire Emslie had five shots and accounted for FAU's score in the 80th minute of play in unassisted fashion.

FAU will conclude action in Texas on Sunday against UTSA. Match time is 2:00 PM.

Tough break for the women's soccer team today…match release via SID Brandon Goodwin:

Despite picking up a point in the Conference USA standings, the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team saw its postseason hopes dashed with a 1-1 draw at UTSA on Sunday.

UTSA (5-10-2, 1-7-1 C-USA) was tenacious early, taking eight shots within the first 23 minutes of the match. The Roadrunners would find the back of the net on the eighth attempt as Charlotte Husoe buried a free kick from 25 yards out to take an early lead.

The Owls (7-8-4, 2-4-3 C-USA) took 16 shots before freshman Asta Arnadottir scored her second career goal in the 87th minute on an assist by Dani Dangremond. FAU's Taylor Townsend would take another shot in the 88th minute, but it was saved to send the Owls to their ninth overtime match of 2014.

FAU took four shots in the overtime periods, and placed two on goal, but UTSA's Katherine Tesno made her 10th and 11th saves of the game to keep the Owls at bay.

FAU owns nine points in the C-USA standings, but cannot reach the 13 points that would put them into tournament consideration.

The Owls will travel to Ruston, La. to face Louisiana Tech for their final match of 2014 on Thursday, Oct. 30. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m. ET.

Women's soccer concluded 2014 play with a 1-0 loss to Louisiana Tech in overtime on Thursday night…match release via SID Brandon Goodwin:

The 24th season of Florida Atlantic women’s soccer culminated with a 1-0 overtime loss at Conference USA foe Louisiana Tech on Thursday.

The Owls (7-9-4, 2-5-3 C-USA) will enter the NCAA record books with their tenth overtime game of 2014, the third most in Division I history.

Three seniors – Olivia MBala, Amanda Odato and Yazmin Ongtengco – played in their final match as Owls. Ongtengco now ranks seventh all-time at FAU in minutes played as she surpassed the 6,000 minute mark in the final game of her career.

The Owls placed two shots on goal early in the match, but Taylor Townsend’s attempt was blocked while Hildur Hauksdottir’s shot was scooped up by Tech goalkeeper Kylee Seto.

FAU keeper Sydney Drinkwater’s second-half efforts kept the Owls in the game as she made five of her eight saves in the second half, including two in the closing minutes of regulation.

Hauksdottir would take her team-high fourth shot early in overtime, but missed wide left in the 92nd minute.
After a save by Drinkwater, Tech’s Brittany Beddow took the rebound and scored her seventh goal of the season in the 97th minute for the victory.

Drinkwater ends her first season as an Owl ranking among the best in FAU history. Her .98 goals against average sits at sixth all-time in a season and is second best among career leaders. The sophomore’s .809 save percentage is the eighth best in a season and currently ranks as the best in a career in FAU history.
