FAU women’s soccer team knocked off Conference USA regular season champions and top-seeded North Texas to advance to the tournament championship, 3-2 on Friday night.
The Owls (12-7-2) will take on the winner of Friday’s second semifinal match, either host Charlotte or UTEP, on Sunday at 11 a.m. The team that survives will earn the C-USA automatic qualifying bid into the NCAA Women’s College Cup.
After North Texas (15-5-1) clawed back to tie it up with just under 18 minutes left, it was a pair of seniors that propelled the Owls to victory. Sophie Sanchez took a run, crossed it from the right side of the box to just outside the goal line, and fellow fourth-year Kelsey Parry headed it in with 8:59 left for what would be the game-winner.

Now we can give our womens soccer coach a big raise and an indoor practice field!
Charlotte (11-8-2) got on the board early and played add-on twice more in the first half. The first score of the match came just 5:06 in, off of a corner and two headers, the second of which was nearly turned away by defender Sophie Sanchez but was determined to be over the goal line. The 49ers made good on headers as well in the 26th and 42nd minutes respectively, and took a 3-0 lead into the break.
Unfortunately for the Owls (12-8-2), coming out of the half, Charlotte quickly added another goal to keep the momentum. Just 2:03 in, a rocket by Emily Truelove found the right side of the net for what would be the final score of the match as the 49ers would notch the 4-0 shutout for the title.
