A valiant second half rally by the Florida Atlantic University men’s basketball team came up just short in a 69-64 loss to Old Dominion on Thursday. The loss drops the Owls to 12-17 overall and 6-11 in Conference USA play.
They entered the contest as 16 point underdogs.
The Monarchs’ (23-6, 14-3) built a 16-point lead in the first half, helped by holding the Owls to just six field goals through the game’s first 20 minutes. That sixth field goal was a Ronald Delph jumper that cut the margin to 14 at the break.
FAU rallied to begin the second half and Jailyn Ingram converted a three-point play to give the Owls a 40-39 lead with 11:36 to go in the game. ODU responded with 20-8 run to reestablish a double-digit advantage, 59-48, with under five minutes remaining.
Justin Massey and Ronald Delph combined for the Owls’ next dozen points, to trim the deficit to two at 63-61, but ODU scored the next six points to seal the win. Payton Hulsey hit a three-pointer just before the buzzer to account for the final score.
The Owls wrap up the regular season on Saturday against Charlotte at 7:30 PM.
