For the first time this season all of the games in Conference USA Football will be league games. One Friday night matchup and six Saturday showdowns spread through the day make up the week eight ledger.

An East Division Friday night showdown between Marshall and Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton will get things started. This game features a matchup of last season’s C-USA co-Freshmen of the Year in Thundering Herd QB Isaiah Green and Owls QB Chris Robison as well as the league’s current leader in tackles (Marshall junior LB Tavante Beckett – 60) and interceptions (FAU senior DB Meiko Dotson – 4).

The second-most played rivalry in Conference USA takes place again on Saturday afternoon when Southern Miss visits Louisiana Tech in the 51st meeting between the schools. Both teams are tied for first in the West Division with 2-0 league marks as Bulldogs senior QB J’Mar Smith (259.0 ypg) and Golden Eagles junior QB Jack Abraham (323.0 ypg), two of the top three C-USA leaders in passing per game, square off.

Middle Tennessee makes the trip to North Texas in a matchup of squads looking to get back on track after division losses on the road last Saturday.  Junior S Reed Blankenship and the Blue Raiders secondary will look to slow down Mean Green WR Jaelon Darden, the league’s leader in receiving touchdowns.

WKU will look to move to 4-0 in C-USA play when Charlotte comes to Bowling Green.  49ers senior RB Benny LeMay leads C-USA with 622 rushing yards and has five TDs, while Hilltoppers junior RB Gaej Walker is third with 558 yards and four scores.

UAB will put its 15-game winning streak at Legion Field on the line when Old Dominion comes to town. This will be the first-ever meeting between the Blazers and Monarchs.

Rice returns to action following a bye week to take on UTSA. Owls’ junior RB Aston Walter has posted back-to-back 100-yard rushing games along with six total touchdowns, while Roadrunners freshman RB Sincere McCormick has scored a TD in four of his last five games and ran for 473 yards on the season.

UTEP was idle last week and this Saturday night it will make the trek to Miami to take on FIU. Miners senior RB Treyvon Hughes has scored five rushing touchdowns in the first five games of the season, while Panthers senior RB Anthony Jones scored four times last week in a win against Charlotte and has eight total TDs on the season.

FINAL:

Southern Miss 30  LA Tech 45

The Bulldogs (6-1) remove any doubt that they are the best team in the west right now, and become bowl eligible with five games still to play.

FINAL:

Charlotte 14  WKU 30

The Hilltoppers are challenged in the first half, but blank the 49ers offense in the second. Charlotte RB Benny LeMay continues to struggle, netting just 45 yards on 15 tries.

FINAL:

Middle Tenn  30  North Texas 33

Each team will have to go 4-2 the rest of the way to even sniff the post season.

FINAL:

Old Dominion 14  UAB 38

The Blazers also punch their post season eligibility ticket on Saturday.

The Monarchs manage just 137 total yards for the afternoon. The fact that they scored 14 points is somewhat amazing.

The passing game was almost no where to be found, as QB Messiah deWeaver goes 6-of-24 for 82 yards with a 42 yard long eating up over half that total.

The running game was even worse, good for just 39 yards on 33 attempts.

Owls should be double-digit favorites once again next weekend.

FINAL:

Rice 27 UTSA 31

The other Owls (0-7, 0-3) remain the best defeated team in C-USA. It's really a shame. They are much better than their record indicates.

They lost 21-13 to now #18 Baylor in week 4, who waxed UTSA 63-14 in week 2.

Meanwhile, the Roadrunners improve to 3-4, and 2-2 in C-USA with the win.

With 4-of-5 remaining games as the underdog, including their tilt against the Owls on November 23rd, it will likely take a miracle for UTSA to reach the post season.

FINAL:

UTEP 17  FIU 32

Efficiency prevails for the Panthers.

While both teams used the ground game as a primary strategy, FIU came out on top 185-132 in yards gained.

This is shown as the Miners ran 17 more plays for the contest, 13 of which were carry attempts.

The Defensive Player of the Week honor went to Louisiana Tech junior CB Amik Robertson, who had three interceptions in the Bulldogs’ victory over Southern Miss.

The Special Teams Player of the Week award was given to North Texas sophomore K Ethan Mooney, who had four field goals, including the game-winner, as time expired in the Mean Green’s win over Middle Tennessee.

C-USA Football Players of the Week are voted on by a panel of the league’s media.
