FINAL | #ODU 13 - #FAU 5
The Owls load the bases via the walk in the ninth, but it’s not enough to keep their C-USA Championship hopes alive.

When the Owls came into this game, one thing was blatantly clear: they were missing TJ Stuart and Jacob Josey. The Owls turned to their bullpen and had Braden Ostrander start today's game after using all three of their main starters already this week, and it became costly with the Owls losing 13-5 to the Old Dominion Monarchs, ending their hopes at a C-USA Championship. The Monarchs' offensive onslaught was led by Andy Gariola, who had three of ODU's seven home runs.
The Rundown
- The Owls one weapon in this game was their plate discipline. FAU forced 12 walks by ODU pitchers and even drew in one of their five runs with a bases-loaded walk by Victor Castillo, capping off four consecutive walks to begin the ninth inning.
- FAU lost the strikeout battle by a mile, with the batters striking out 12 times and the pitchers only punching out four ODU batters.'
- Florida Atlantic's offense went uncharacteristically silent, only registering five hits. They hit .161 as a team.
- When the Owls had runners on base, they had trouble driving them in. They hit .154 with runners in scoring position and .200 with runners on base.
- In their three at-bats with the bases loaded, all coming in the ninth inning when they had a bases-loaded, no-out situation, the Owls were 0-3.
"I thought our guys were ready, you have to give Old Dominion credit, they played really, really well offensively, it's a special ballclub. We scored five, but we had plenty of opportunities, we left (13) on base. In one of the (ODU) innings, they get runners on, they hit a three-run homer. We get the same thing, and fly out to centerfield. That's the difference in the game, they were able to capitalize when we weren't able to close out innings, and we couldn't capitalize and they closed out the innings. We'll get home and start working on next year." - Head Coach John McCormack
The Owls finish up the C-USA Baseball Championship with a 2-2 record.`

Of course as FAU Fans we are used to the Owls being one of them, but no matter how you slice it it's still good.
That said, we need to get the upgrades going quickly as it's becoming harder and harder to rely on coaching namesake and "history" as the reason to commit here. When you have teams like Charlotte and Old Dominion coming into the conversation, its obvious to see that a Florida Team (us) is losing ground.

On a side note, it's really remarkable the level of talent this year's season had for the league. Four Top 25 Teams in the mix.

Well the other question is how much longer is Mac realistically going to do it, either at this level or in general? He’s nearing his mid-50s and he’s been a baseball coach non-stop for over 30 years. (And if he wanted a P5 job, I truly believe he could get one. The resume speaks for itself.)
Mac is still at the top of his game as a coach and recruiter so I trust him…but I could easily see a scenario where baseball becomes a very middle of the pack, hovering around .500 program if/when Mac leaves and the facilities aren’t upgraded. He can sell these elite local kids or a very talented junior college prospect on coming here in spite of the warts. His replacement may not be able to.
