C-USA Football: Games for Week of November 20, 2021

Action this week starts off on Friday night with Southern Miss looking to keep their progress in motion on the road for the second straight game against the Bulldogs. They will also be seeking to keep the turnover bug at bay, as that cost them a chance at upsetting UTSA last Saturday in a 27-17 loss to the Roadrunners.

Saturday will feature six contests, with Florida Atlantic opening the action at high noon in Bowling Green against the Hilltoppers after dropping their last two in heart felt fashion.

The Blazers will attempt to steal the stage in the race for the west leader with an upset over the Roadrunners in what is this week's marquee match-up for the division.

Licking their wounds after dropping one to UAB last week, the Herd are heavy favorites against the 49ers on the road. Nonetheless, watchful eyes should keep an eye on this one as it could be much closer that expected.

Fresh off their upset of Florida Atlantic, the Monarchs will take on Coach Rick Stockstill's Blue Raiders, who put up a 50 spot on FIU last Saturday in what was a salt pouring event for Butch Davis' squad who will see a new leader next year as well as a new athletic director to boot.

Rice won't experience a break in the competition with the Miners due up. UTEP has lost three in a row and more than assuredly has their eyes set on getting back into the win column as 10 point favorites for the contest.

In the nightcap, the Mean Green will head south to Sweetwater to face the seemingly hopeless Panthers after taking down UTEP in miraculous fashion last week.

Here's the full slate:

FINAL:

Southern Miss 35  La Tech 19

The Golden Eagles (2-9, 1-6) ruin Senior Night for the Bulldogs in a very unconventional fashion and earn just their second win on the season in the process.

LA Tech was a 15 point favorite.

Southern Miss used former FAU RB commit Frank Gore Jr at QB for 8 passing attempts with 2TD, and DB Antavious Willis for another 3 attempts. The latter was perfect, completing all of them. RB DaJon Richard accounted for one toss - which was successful. The round out was from WR Jakarius Caston, whose lone pass was incomplete.

The Golden Eagles have had a rash of injuries at the signal caller position - which left them desperate to find a solution for the contest. And that they did.

Bulldog's (3-8, 2-5) QB Aaron Allen was 8-of-19 for just 57 yards on the night.

The Golden Eagles win snaps an 8 game losing streak for them as well.

FINAL:

UAB 31  No. 23 UTSA 34

The Roadrunners stay perfect (11-0, 7-0 C-USA) while fighting off a very pesky Blazer effort.

UAB (7-4, 5-2 C-USA) held  a 31-27 lead with just 5:19 to play, but could not get a goal line stop with only 0:01 on the game clock as UTSA entered the end zone for the win.

FINAL:

Marshall 49 Charlotte 28

The Herd (7-4, 5-2 C-USA) put up 588 yards of offense which was led by five rushing scores.

The 49ers (5-6, 3-4 C-USA) will next have a date with Old Dominion to fight it out post season eligibility status.

FINAL:

Old Dominion 24  MTSU 17

Needing to win two games to reach the magical six win mark, the Monarchs (5-6, 4-3 C-USA) take care of business on the road and upend the Blue Raiders who were looking to lock up the same today.

The Owls will have to contend with that next weekend with MTSU (5-6, 3-4 C-USA) coming to Boca Raton.

FINAL:

Rice 28  UTEP 38

The Miners (7-4, 4-3 C-USA) end their three-game losing streak at the Owls' expense.

Fueled by a three-score 2nd quarter, Rice led 21-14 at the break, but had little answer for UTEP's second half defensive adjustments, netting only one touchdown from there out to the Miner's three.

QB Jake Constantine was 14-of-25 for 183 yards and two touchdowns for the Owls  (3-8, 2-5 C-USA).

Gavin Hardison tossed a career-high 366 yards for the Miners.

Rice will close out the 2021 season against LA Tech, and UTEP will travel to Birmingham to tackle UAB.

FINAL:

North Texas 49  FIU 7

After a rough six-game start for 2021, the Mean Green (5-6, 4-3 C-USA) notch their fourth straight win by obliterating the Panthers in Sweetwater.

They will join the league's "bubble teams" while hoping to make it five straight next weekend for bowl consideration against the Western Division's best team on paper - UTSA. The good news is that the game is in Denton.

The Panthers (1-10, 0-7 C-USA) have a lot of other issues to deal with, and are likely looking forward to just ending the season. However, they will have to take the field on more time against Southern Miss in Hattiesburg.

At least they have a quarterback; which is not something that can be said for the Golden Eagles.

UTSA came back late to knock off UAB in thrilling fashion, keeping their undefeated season intact to win the Conference USA’s West Division.

Following their win the Roadrunners have swept this week’s Conference USA Player of the Week awards.

After a standout performance where he completed 25-36 passes for 323 yards and three touchdowns in a division-clinching win over UAB, UTSA QB Frank Harris was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week.

UTSA LB Clarence Hicks took home Defensive Player of the Week honors following his impactful play on Saturday, as he recorded three tackles-for-loss, and a pair of sacks.

UTSA K Hunter Duplessis was named C-USA Special Teams Player of the Week for the third time this season, after he made a pair of long field goals (49 and 51 yards), while also making all four extra points in the Roadrunners’ win over UAB.
